FAQ: Questions about the National Meet. - Page 2

Is there a place to see a running total of people who have registered? Someone had a count in one of the threads (Think it was Asr)... so maybe there is but I haven't seen it? Not that I've looked super hard.

There is not a place to see a running total as such, but you can see the whole list at http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showgroups.php. This morning it numbered just under 150 including guest registrations.

Wireless internet at the meet?

I didn't see it mentioned here or in the other threads, but will there be wireless internet connectivity at the meet? I am sure many of us who are bringing laptop computers would find that very useful.

The hotel is a wi-fi hotspot, although it's not free. Episiarch spent quite a bit of time talking with the hotel and their (somewhat draconian) internet provider iBahn about buying "free" access for the meet, and it was prohibitively expensive.

Bah. I guess the answer is no, then. That's unfortunate. With an event like this in the capitol of silicon valley, and no internet? I could envision the need to visit vendor sites, check datasheets of parts or look up other info, go to my own site to show schematics and other stuff, etc, etc.

Could the hotel provide phone lines? Even a dialup connection (gasp!) would be better than nothing.

Fortunately there is supposed to be free connectivity in the guest rooms at the hotel. But users in the common areas like the meeting/ballrooms where we're holding the event do pay a fee.

We really wanted to provide full service for the meet, but it truly was prohibitive. If an event such as ours wants connectivity, it pays an even bigger per-user fee than individual users do. Open all-access connectivity for everyone attending the Meet would incur the biggest fee of all, and it was huge.

Thanks to Grahame we will be building a **non-Internet** local WiFi network so that Squeezeboxes and such have a common SSID to connect to. But we're not going to be bridging it to the Internet.

[edit] question answered above

Can a member bringing equipment to share also have some of his/her equipment for sale?

For example, maybe a member brings 10 headphones, 5 to share and 5 to possibly sell. This member isn't part of an audio company -- just a private individual. Does a member like this need to register as a "vendor," or can the member informally offer some of his used equipment for sale?

We are planning to have a bulletin board or white board for FS/FT postings by individual members. You can post up your name and what you have FS/FT and interested parties can either find you or post up a response. Should be simple enough if people are interested in using it. Look for the bulletin board outside the main ballroom.

Are we going to have the AC cranked, or should we all plan to dress for a hot environment? Some meets I've been to require a jacket because they've been well cooled or ventilated (with low outside temps), and others have been infernos where we roasted even if we were just in a t-shirt and jeans.

Quick question that occurred to me this morning and can be put WAY down the priority list, for those of us who registered but are unable to attend, any chance of shooting someone a paypal payment for postage and getting a hold of our name tags? I'd hate to see someone's hard work go to waste.

Excellent question and unfortunately I don't think we can know the answer until we get all the gear and bodies into the room. We'll be in your basic climate-controlled hotel environment so I would be somewhat surprised if it got too hot. Will it get too cold? My experience is that hotels are more often over-airconditioned than under, so I would definitely be prepared with a sweatshirt and/or jacket.

NOOoooo problem. After the Meet I will post something about how to do this in case there are others who are interested. Probably it will be a "send self-addressed stamped envelope" sort of procedure.

Or if you know someone coming to the meet whom you'd like to have bring your badge back for you, PM me before the meet and I'll try to ensure it gets into the right hands.
