climbing

i've noticed that i'm not the only climber around here, and thought i'd make a thread. i've been out of it for awhile, alas (though desperately want to get back), but in my prime i did a lot of climbing in yosemite, the needles, joshua tree, and other sport spots in california as well. just rock. haven't tried ice yet, though if you see where i now live, i have lots of possibilities. moved here for the climbing (and to go to school, but who cares about that? )

it's something i really love. i'd like to get more into the mountaineering and alpinism side of things, and again i'm in a good place to start.

to those who haven't tried, "rock" gyms are pretty plentival and can be a good place to learn the ropes (chuckle...) in a safe, controlled environment.

without a doubt the most intense and perhaps the happyiest moments in my life have been climbing. i remember one very clearly climbing "the nutcracker" in Yosemite, and was initially very shaky, but managed to clear my head and started singing "freebird" won't forget it.

i also remember the few instances when i, for one foolish reason or another, found myself in a dangerous situation, run-out and with the possibility of serious injury or death if i fell; i'm generally a very safe climber, but there are times when you just can't place gear, or you didn't bring enough etc. i try to forget and convince myself that climbing is safe

other climbers? anyone intrigued? i highly recommend it. can be a really inspiring thing

PS: get this though, the wife got the rack (climbing gear) in the divorce, so i need to rebuild traded it for a CAT scan and an eco-cardio for my mysterious disease; (you'll have to have mercy on me, but) i'm going to be selling some audio gear to finance the re-armament

i QUITE like climbing.

i have been bouldering much more for the simple reason that i started. the reason i started is the kicker. i was climbing with someone from work, who i know to be a pretty hard stoner. one day he was belaying me, and i was just thinking "6 ft of slack, great." after that, i just wanted to boulder.

yeah, i've had some good friends that i wasn't willing to climb with becuase i didn't trust them completely with the rope; hard, but necessary

funny story, but i was belaying up a friend of mine and she was struggling hard with this mantle, cursing and yelling, finally got to the top, and this fellow walks up, stoned out of his mind and says, "hey man, does she need a toke?" ................good times.....many a stoner in yosemite....another time a fellow told me to "get high on the heights"...... that's good stuff

course weed and belaying don't mix

where are you from?

i climb quite a bit in the gunks, and want to start leading more this spring/summer. so far i have mostly done it when my non-stoner friends are afraid to lead something.

ah lovely; my english prof/climbing mentor grant horner has done quite a bit in the gunks; looks pretty dicy for setting pro in those horizontal cracks.

double bonus points to those who can name that climb in the gunks...

its a VERY popular climb, one of the few 5.6+ that climbing or rock&ice usually mentions as being worth climbing... that is just after the crux move of the second pitch about 200ft off the ground.

Great pic. My cousin climbs with his family at the Gunks often. I hope to make it up there one of these to join them.

I wouldn't call myself a climber but I have climbed at Seneca Rocks, WV and Yosemite. It's always been top ropping. We have a local rock climbing gym that we used to belong to. After Yosemite this summer, I am hoping to make it back to the gym.

Here is a pick from Yosemite, not nearly as impressive as yours, NG:

I'm really glad to hear that there are other climbers here on Head-Fi. I know this thread is a little old, so are you guys still climbing hard?

I just got into bouldering in December 2010, and have been doing it since. I absolutely love it, but my fingers and tendons probably really hate me for it. I'm a solid V2 now, starting to work on V3s. I'm climbing primarily indoors, but I've been outdoors once (Tramline, Palm Springs). Outdoors is a completely different experience, but also enjoyable.

Right now, I feel that I've kind of hit a plateau at V2. I can do most V2s solidly, but V3s are just a little out of my reach. I think it's because I'm still a bit too heavy. I do a bit of weightlifting, and I'm 5'10", 185lbs. This seems to be way heavier than anyone else at the gym, even the taller guys, who seem to be in the 150-160lb range. This sucks for me, as even if we were the same strength, I'm carrying around an extra 20-30lbs...oh well, I guess there's nothing else for me to do but more cardio and tone down.

Oh, and one more thing that's got me hooked: there are some very hot and fit climbing girls! They all climb stronger than I do, but hey, I don't mind looking up (literally) to them. evil_smiley.gif

Seeing the title of this thread made me so happy! I started climbing in high school and now I'm up to about a 5.10a, but work has not given me enough time to climb in the past year. Accordingly, I'm out of shape atm but I do hope to lead my first 5.10c by the end of next year.

I'm actually quite rubbish at bouldering. I can do a few V2's, but it definitely suits somebody with a very muscular body type over the lighter types. You can get away in normal climbing up until 5.10 or so with fairly minimal strength as long as you're light and have good technique.

Hopefully I'll get to lead some stuff next week in the gunks!!!
