For your friend's musical inclinations, PK3 would be the OBVIOUS choice between PK2 and PK3. If they are listening to a lot of hiphop/rap and alternative, PK2 will NOT sound good at all with that recessed low end. Of course, all of this is IMO. The PK2's bass is just not present enough, so PK3 would be the worthy choice. Plus they are only $39, buy them now! I have had the PK2s, PK3s, and now I have the PK1s, so I have experience with all of them.
Not trying to get into an argument, just another perspective. I've got the PK2 and PK3 and when I went back and forth with them I found the differences to be surprisingly subtle. The mid and treble detail is a bit better in the PK2. After hearing about the difference in bass response I was listening closely for it and could not tell the difference between the two. I would say that for anyone who does not call him or herself an audiophile, there is no significant difference between the two. I would consider the PK2 to be a small step up in quality for most types of music.

Thanks. If you have a model number that you have tried and recommend, please share it.

Agreed, from having tried PK3's for an extended period of time and currently owning the PK2's.

I have to agree as well. I've owned all three PKs, and sold the PK1 (wasn't using them much because of amping necessity), and the PK2, mainly for the reason that I felt the PK3s were a better value (and I got the PK2 for $50 when they first came out via group buy. The PK3s were $25 then as well). Anyway, the more I compared, the less difference there seemed to be, though the PK3 did deliver somewhat more bass, as noted). I just feel the PK3s are a great value, and not all that far from the other two PKs.

In fact, I had recently sold my PK3s, but after selling off my IE8s and Turbines as well, I rebought the PK3s because I just need to have a pair around.

Bummed out, I think I lost my PK2's when I was out and about this week. Hopefully they will turn up, if not, I may have to go with the PK3 to save some cash. Anyone know how they compare?

Pretty similar. You'll be sacrificing bit of clarity and mids in exchange for bit better bass and warmer presentation.

I'm returning my PK1's because I don't hear enough of an improvement to justify the $120 difference vs the PK3.

PK3's are seriously an UNBEATABLE value.

Thanks guys, sounds like the PK3 will do just fine then. Going to go and check the van good again before I order.

Many thanks for the information!

Too bad Radio Shack only sells a pair of black foam cover replacements if you also buy a pair of the same in blue!

Yuck!

Whoever thought up this marketing scheme at RS should get spanked.

Whew, found my PK2s!

Are the cables on the newer PK2s the same as the PK3s? I had some older PK2s and the cable nearest the bud became very stiff over time.

I've enjoyed my PK2's quite a bit, and actually listen to them more than any of my other stuff due to them being my work 'phones. But now that I DO have an amp (I didn't at the time of the PK2 purchase), should I move onto the PK1? Without having to read through this monstrous thread, I'd appreciate either quick or long responses on whether it would be worth it.

Yes, the PK1 is a significant upgrade. Highs, mids and bass are all better compared to the PK2. Soundstage is improved since they're amped, too.

I don't have the PK2s or the PK3s to compare to but my PK1s just arrived and they are fantastic out of the box. Can't wait for them to burn in. I tried them amped (via the headphone out of a Cambridge Audio 540A) and unamped and they're suprisingly good unamped with a bit more separation when amped. Would never have heard of these earphones were it not for head fi so thanks guys!
