Although I would not consider her voice haunting or sultry, Alanis Morissette's unplugged CD is very good and on the melodic side. Also contains a great cover of King of Pain

Keep them coming.

Are You Listening? [IMPORT]
Dolores O'Riordan (Performer)

Former lead of The Cranberries will release her first solo album in May. That could be very good.

For jazz, I just ran across Laura Fygi. She's quite good.

Paula Cole
Sarah Brightman
Going to get flamed for this one...Christina Aguilera. When you look past her pop crap the girl really has a set of lungs.
Clannad
x10 for Sarah McLachlan

Visit:

This label has a few female vocalists, I'm not certain it's the style you're looking for but there are sound clips to preview and Cheskey does great recornings.

I can't believe I forgot about her! I looove her voice. It's so pleasant, airy, & soothing although I don't consider her technically a great singer. However, I've always found what's considered "great" really irritating...like Mariah Carey & Celine Dion, for example.

Ricki Lee Jones

very talented vocalist and excellent writer, I find some of her best work to be the stuff that is not as mainstream on the radio. Unique voice, once her hear her you never forget it.

and cant have a list like this without

Stevie Nicks, one of my favorite female voices of all time
