Jays q-JAYS & s-JAYS, Prototype impressions - Page 4

Just wanted to chime in with some more q-JAYS impressions. I know everyone has told me in the past that balanced armature IEMs do not significantly change their sonic character with use. But something has happened to this set.

After ~200-300+++ hour impressions (I have lost track of exactly how many hours of use I have logged in):

The treble seems to have smoothed out a little more.

The treble just doesn't seem as pronounced as before. Theres a much less distinct midrange to treble transition. Previously there was a distinct cut-off point around ~5500 Hz where I could easily hear frequency boost from 5500-20000Hz. Directly comparing the PK1 to the q-JAYS, it was very obvious. Now however, that junction is much more smooth and cohesive, very similar the PK1... that level/degree of midrange to treble transition. I can't pinpoint the exact hour of usage when this "break-in" occurred, although I have noticed it more recently in the past ~7 days. I have lost count how many hours I have on these total.

Overall the sound seems more "organic", and much less sterile. I cant put it into words. Drum resonance sounds more realistic and "acoustic" now then before. Drums actually sound like resonating wood chambers of air, as opposed to something more synthetic. Instruments sound more like resonating strings and wood, than synthetic reproductions.

I'll bring these to the big san Jose meet for anyone who is interested.

cheers!!

That sounds great ! Is there a precise release date ?
**please don't tell me "May"... I'm already tempted by the Westone UM3**

We can't give a more specific date then that. Sorry.

Yes they should have got them by now. Email or call them for further info. If not then audiocubes.com has them.

q-JAYS is doing well. We will have a new prototype ready soon and the retail version by the end of may/beginning of june if nothing more happens. It's very hard to give a specific date since we want to be very sure that it will be such a good product as we want too.
Great. I really can't wait for the q-JAYS. They look like exactly the IEM I'm looking for.

One more thing. I know you've probably heard it before and I saw your earlier comment about wanting to be able to retain control of the customer experience, but it would be very cool if you could get your products out to more American retailers. Amazon would be awesome. It also seems like they've got their system set up so that you still control the customer service, shipping, and all that, but your products get listed on Amazon to a huge audience through their Marketplace. Admittedly, I really don't know anything about what goes on behind the scenes or exactly what it takes to get your product in with a new retailer, but it seems like it should be perfect for JAYS and it'd be a lot easier for the average guy like me (who buys from Amazon all the time and gets gift certificates to Amazon) and a lot of other people I know.

One last question, is there any chance you release a triple-driver or 3-way IEM (let's say s-JAYS ) ?

On that note.... I've subjected the q-jays to my standard battery of thrash-durability tests the past ~4 weeks.

This is where I take my head-fi "hat" off and I become average-joe consumer. You know, the guy who throws his headphones carelessly in his backpack, or winds them up around his MP3 player and shoves them into a pocket.

I've done all of the above on a regular basis the past 3-4 weeks. I have fallen asleep ON them, rolling around ON them at night. My 2 year old daughter tugs at them an plays with them as if they are a yo-yo. So far they have held up just fine. At first I was a little skeptical of the strain relief design, but they have passed without problems.

At this point, I really do think an alligator shirt clip is a must for these IEMs. It reduces microphonics, generally makes them more comfortable, and it also helps to alleviate the pull-force of the wire onto the IEM itself.

thats all for now,
Garrett

Maybe Martin didn't mention that the strain relief is not there at all on the first proto There will be a much better one on the next proto (everything is better then nothing I guess hehe). But I'm glad they've worked flawless even though they missed that

We are working on a clip at the moment.

Cheers and have a great great weekend Kramer and everyone else!
