Buying Home theater speakers

Im looking to spend around $400 for 5 speakers for my home theater setup. Im kind of leaning towards 4 of the infinity primus 150 speakers and the primus C25 for the center. Would this be the best setup for that budget?

Also id be using a ONKYO TX-SR304 would the speakers be able to reach there full potential using that receiver?

Are you budgeting any for a subwoofer?

hard to get a 5 channels speakers setup with $400. there used to be the acoustic reserach stature which was excellent but they cant be find no more. i would have to scounge ebay or audiogon for some good speaker, $400 is tough you may have to stretch it a bit. especially online ordering it will cost some money.

you may want to look at the onix series.

i can build a 5 channel cerwin vega classic on amazon. although most people probably want something that look good.

if you cna get a good deal with the primus speakers might as well take it.

when you say reach full potential, in audiophile term thats hard to define. but the receiver is 65watt per channel, it will be able to drive more speakers well.

if i have $400 to spend on speaker, i rather buy two full towers speakers.

I dont really mind if the speakers dont look that great as long as they sound decent.

Crutchfield
4 primus 150
1 primus PC250
429.95 shipped

I found a couple online retailers selling the Acoustic Research ARS10
4 speakers -389.98 shipped

Acoustic research ar ARVP600 3-way tower speakers
2 floor standers $150

The onix speakers were a little bit out of my budget
4 speakers $520 shipped

Out of the cerwin vega, primus speakers and the acoustic research speakers which which would i get the best sound from?
Would i get better sound from 2 floor standing speakers then 5 cheaper bookshelf speakers?

I used the have the S10, S20, and S40. They make really excellent movie speakers. Not the most detailed but really smooth and good for slow, and really sweet midrange. Actually it could get detailed if pair with a good amp, that thing is 46lbs each, it is easy to drive, but to get all that out of it probably need more than the pioneer a-35r amp 45watt I was using at the time. I really like the base reponse for the S40, factory claimed it goes down to 26hz, it is good for movie. Slower music like jazz and blues sound excellent on these. Another awesome thing is s40 is 5ways and not made in china. I got it for $180, its hard to find these day and they normally go more than $200. These speakers are like a little known secret, they perform so well, I think if you could find the towers to go along with it it could be and excellent deal. Stay away from the other cheaper 3-ways acoustic speakers. Company went out of business now, bought by audiovox so thats what you're buying these newer ones and they are really bad.

You could go to ebay or audigon and look out of old Kef Q speakers or B&W but that could be tough. Mission M70s speakers used to be popular.

Or you could get these Celestion F-series speakers, you could buy the whole package for less than $400. They used have silver dome tweeter but now they use titanium I think it may a bit brigther.

The speaker world is really big comparing to headphones, so choosing speakers is harder imo because there are a lot of variables concerned. It's good to visist speaker forum to see what other people use. Like avsforum or check out audioreviews, although those are bias reviews it can be useful.

If you do look into onix I would recommend looking at the towers. You won't get that impact for movie with the smaller speakers, and you may have to buy extra stands for them aswell. I am very stereo bias, so i always prefer a more expensive 2 towers over smallers ones, if I cant afford the whole 5.1. If i could afford the 5.1 I would ditch it and buy an even more expensive 2 towers. But thats just me, I only have two ears.

Point is its better to buy some good speakers when you are spending low and enjoy maximum clarity and bass response, rather than having 5 cheapie speaking that none sound good.

If you went up to 580$, Id go for the onix speakers. They are said to be the best for the price.
