The official "most OVERRATED headphones" thread - Page 42

I can now add the Edition 9 to the "most overrated" list. I blame its midrange, however which just doesn't gel with me. If Ultrasone hadn't hyped up S-Logic so much, I'd be more forgiving, however.

I consider ALL AudioTechnica headphones overrated, as every single model I've heard sound boring and the most like I have two small speakers strapped to my head. The JPN series are grossly over-priced and are in dire need of a re-cable, which makes them even more grossly over-priced.

That Goldring whatever it is that some people have: I picked it up to listen to a pair in a shop and the first thing they did was creak very loudly -- FAIL!

when i first heard Audio Technica..it was the AD500 model..i didnt like it at all..and at the same exhibition i bought HD555.

What do you think are the most overrated headphones in the sub $200 range?

HD595, easily.

edit: I suppose they are technically just over 200, which makes them even more astounding... I see prices as low as $199 though at some sites. Average seems to be $230ish.

Interesting how Senns have somewhat of a rep for being overrated. I'm sure they make great headphones, but maybe they are the hyped up brand- like the Apple of the pc world? Don't get me wrong, I have a 4.5 yr old powerbook still going strong, and I love it.

Well the PS1000 offcourse... anyway I'm gonna buy it as soon as I have the chance.

I read this entire thread (waste of time, lol), and I noticed that my beloved M50's have not been mentioned by name, and I'm not about to add them!

I have to say that the MetroFi 220's are at least overpriced, if not overrated (boomboomboom, with very little midrange detail, and not much treble IMHO).

I don't feel that the M50s are overrated per se. They're great bang for the buck, but not the clear winner in their category/price range. I just see a lot of people who simply recommend them because that's what everyone else says (the Senn HD25-1 also fits here).

The Apple of the PC world would be Monster. Sorry to all Mac users out there.

In my experience thus far, Sennheiser HD 650, 598, and Grado in general. I got both to audition because of their immense praise here, and did not enjoy them for a single genre. The HD650 has miniscule soundstage for open cans and sounds totally dry/unengaging. The 598 looks awesome and has humongous soundstage, but it has a grainy, smooth sound that was almost a chore to listen to. At best, they did alright for jazz and prog rock.

I tested one Grado pair, the SR225i. Since metal is my main genre, I see these recommended all the time, so I finally decided to see what the fuss was all about. It's too bad they made my ears hurt with like 20 seconds of wear. I have absolutely no idea how anyone could wear those bowls comfortably. I have to wonder where Grado gets all their praise. And no, my ears aren't huge, they''re average.

Actually, due to its extreme overrated-ness, it received its own thread lmfao.

Yeah, I <3 mine too =D.  Ignorance is bliss sometimes.

It's over-recommended, not overrated, in general. Usually those who say "M50 has a $500 sound" (overrating it) get firebombed to hell and back.

Here's how it works,

Often new headfiers come and ask for $100~200 cans "with solid bass, sparkly but nonfatiguing treble, good for rap/rnb/pop/etc genres that need bass" (nine out of ten times) and M50s get recommended, they buy the M50s, love it, and the next time a new newb comes and asks the same thing more people recommend the M50s - the vicious cycle continues.

I see it as a good thing because it turns to a  "reference" phone.  So if somebody is inquiring about a different phone, it can easily be compared to the m50 and get a general idea.
