Which one for DJ use/hiphop music - Sony MDR-V500DJ or AKG K 518 DJ?

Hi,

I really need your help on this one, 'cause I have very little of experience of DJ phones. The phones would come as a comforting gift for one of my best friends, who was cheated on a Sony V700DJ-phones deal (paid but never saw the phones). I found a used pair of Sony V500DJ for 40€ which here in Finland cost about 100€ as new. The AKG 518's would cost 50€ as new.

So. Which one would comfort my friend better?

I would also like to hear some comparison between 518's and V700. It would be nice to know if my friend has to satisfy for inferior set of phones or if I can happily inform him that he got better phones than what he paid for (he's not an expert on any kind of headphones).

PS. Also other DJ phones (costing about 40-70€) suggestions are mostly welcome!

I almost guarantee you'll be disappointed.

You should try:
the AKG's you mention
Sennheiser HD 465 (a little bassy but clear)
Sennheiser EH 250 (better than HD 465)
AKG K 81 DJ (probably the ones you'll really want)

You should not try:
Anything Sony unless it is the MDR7506 or MDRV6.

K81 and K518 are the same phones, 518 offers a differnt graphic, so you can probably try out K81s, and if you like it, then you will like the 518 (sound wise)

I would be more than happy to let you have a session with my k81,s
pritty sure after you have a listen you will buy these.

I gave the v500dj's a listening to, not my cup of tea.
just lacking in all parts.
theres noway they are worth the 90-120 what they charge for them.

I got my k81dj,s from thomann.de 49€..

I own a pair of sony v700 and if the v500 sounds about the same...DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT BUYING THEM!!!!! Luckily I upgraded a short time ago.
They seem to have the same build as the v700 which means they will certainely break within half a year of frequent use. The pair I have at the moment is my second pair and they both broke down on the same spot. They really suck bigtime! I hate sony anyways (never heard their good cans, but still).
The sound is really bad. They have a bass wich is probably all they have and even then it is a terrible sounding bass. Very muddy and unclear. Let alone the mids and highs.
I have to say I have never heard the v500 but by hearing its name my neckhairs are rising. Also never heard the AKG ones but I think I can say you'd be better of with them.

Thank you for kind offer, but I was thinking of going to visit Verkkokauppa.com which has K 518's in the stock. I think they let me listen to them there. Btw they cost 49,90€ there, thomann charges extra 20€ for posting.

Get the K81DJ. Same thing as K518DJ but I prefer the color

Well I prefer the looks of K 518 . Besides the K 81 is little bit hard to find anymore.
