Audiophiles: What is the best flash-based Mp3 player available?

Sound quality is my main criteria.
Flash-based - minimum 2gb.

At this point, my 2 top contenders are Cowon's U3 and D2.

D2 has slightly higher output to the headphones (74 mw vs 60 mw); but that doesn't necessarily mean it will have better sound. Any advice on which of these 2 have better SQ?

Are there any other brands / models I should be looking at?

You get a lot more player with the D2, I would also assume it would sound a little better do to the fact it is using a telechips TCC78x plus a wolfson 8985 for the audio, while the U3 uses the "all in one" telechips TC770 for the audio.

At this point, I will wait for iriver clix2 (coming in ~March/April). The only thing D2 has over clix2 is the memory slot, nothing more. (see the link in my sig. if you want to find out more)

+ Bigger screen
+ Battery life (I heard the Clix2 is rated for 25 hours or so)
+ UMS/MSC Protocol (Works with all operating systems)
+ More mW from the headphone-out

Those things add up..

Maybe, as long as its 1G. Its line-out is the most valuable aspect.

But honestly krmathis, have you ever used/recommended anything not by Apple?

My brother has an iPod nano. It's pretty nice, and I'm usually a huge Apple fanboy, but I'm SERIOUSLY drooling over that new Cowon D2. It looks totally awesome, supports more formats than you can shake a stick at, huge battery life, and being Cowon, probably sounds better than most other offerings too. Oh yeah, and it works with Macs and Linux too . I've never used it myself though.

also consider the meizu m6. awesome sound quality (dedicated highly regarded chip for decoding), good phase corrected equalizer, ~30+ hour battery life, flac, album art, videos, recording, fm tuner, lightweight, nice screen, etc

the D2 is a great player. the battery is incredible. obviously the 52 hours is overkill, but i personally got about 40 hours with my music and testing methods, which is still pretty damn good. the sound is great in my opinion, just as good as my X5L, and better than any other player that I've used.
