Hornet + cans combo survey

I wanted to take a quick survey or poll and see what cans people were using with their RSA Hornet. I know it's main target is the IEM market but it also seems capable of driving some cans. I thought it might be interesting to read about what combos people enjoy. I suppose it's kind of cart before the horse by asking about the amp first but I wanted to try something different.

HD650s with no problem. Sounds pretty darn good.

Mmm... HD 650 "just" for me. I would use a more powerful amp for the 650 if you really want the sound to be at her full potential. Larocco PRII would probably be better for HD650.

ER4S sounds good on the Hornet at high gain.

Grados, HD-25, other IEM's... my hornet does the job fine.

Don't get me wrong...I power the 650s with a G-Lite LE w/ DPS. But I've used the 650/Hornet M combo for a while before I got the Gilmore and I thought/still think it does a pretty good job of it. But yeah, home amps are better.

I use it to power my K701: iPod - ALO Jumbo Cryo - Hornet (not "M" version) - K701. It seriously shows when something was recorded badly.

As for the KSC75, there is very little difference to justify lugging it around like that, especially when the KSC75 is open in the first place and it's meant to be for portable situations.

Don't you mean the Tomahawk? The Hornet isn't specifically for IEM's, it's a portable amp designed for all headphones (designed with HD600 in mind), that's why it has 3 gain settings.

I use my E4 and HD650. Both sound superb out of my Hornet.

Agreed. I wasn't saying it can't drive it, I think I was more comparing it to the M902 in which case there is no comparisom.

Who uses 650 for portable anyway?

I've had my Hornet for 5 days and the only 'cans' I've used so far are some Senn MX300 buds. When purgatory ends, the SA5000 and HD 595 will be the partners.

The Hornet "M" can drive anything I have thrown at it: RS1, K701, HD600, K501, DT990(250ohm), ER4S, V-Moda, UM2, etc.

I use mine with Ultrasone HFI-700s (high gain) and Shure E3Cs (low gain). The gain switch allows you to operate the Hornet with just about any headphone.

I've used the Hornet with 650s, HF-1s, and various IEMs and it drove them all with excellent sq. I used to use the Hornet/650 combo in my home office using my ipod as a source and the sq was great. I haven't compared it to some of the ss offerings but I bet it would give some of them a run for their money. If you are looking for a one box home and portable solution, the Hornet is one to consider.

OK, that's a fair point. I guess I see so many TH / Hornet comparisons that I tend to (unfairly) lump them together. Then again, that is one reason why I wanted to take an informal poll of the Hornet users because it seems like most use IEMs and I was interested to see what headphone combos are out there and working well. I had a few in mind that I was curious about but I wanted to be a bit different than the typical "Will abc amp work with xyz headphones" type of post.

Well, I use my HD650 with my Hornet, because I don't have the funds to buy a decent home amp in addition to the Hornet. Plus, I think the Hornet holds its ground as a great amp for cans.
