How bad is the sound quality on the Sansas?

Simply, I want to hear about how the sansa sounds from a headfier. Is it really as horrible as some have said?

EDIT: In particular the e200 series [mainly e280].

its not bad... about average with recent firmware. there is one problem though. i dont know about other people, but i can hear static hissing in between tracks, and when no music is playing. mind you, this is only with jvc fx 33s. other than that slight hissing, it is an excellent player. oh, and btw, rockbox is currently in the works for it.

I own a Sansa e280 and an iPod 5.5g. The Sansa's sound quality is noticeably worse than the iPod, but for situations which call for maximum portability I still prefer the Sansa. For going to the grocery store, excercising, etc., the Sansa is good enough.

quality depends much more on files than a player, imo

I have an e270 and it's not that bad. I dumped the BestBuy software and have it paired with a C&C amp. I don't have any hissing or other problems with mine.

The Sansa's pretty good/average, i have a tiny little creative muvo that had a better sound , but i dont mind giving a little bit of sound impact, for more space for music, and a screen. Wasnt easy when the muvo only had a little LED, to tell you it was on or off, and you didnt know what order your song was in.
As for the static people talked about, it seems to be fixed, although there is a slight electronic hiss very faint btw, when you start a new song.
