darth beyers or hd650?

hey i just wanted some opinions around here...

which one would you rather have, darth beyers/luke skybeyer or hd650 with cable upgrades if you could choose only one and WHY.

i'd also like to know the type of music you listen to...

just to give me a general idea of what i'd like to do in the future maybe right now i just want everyone's opinion.

EDIT: ok i forgot to mention what i like in headphones...i dont care if they're open or closed, i love my dt990s but i eq the 10 khz + frequencies down a bit and the low low bass up a bit relative to other frequencies (just a bit), and i love good quality bass and a good quantity (as much as possible without drowning out other frequencies or making it sound muddy). i HATE phones with an emphasis on mid to upper bass frequencies because that really muddies the sound. i listen to many genres of music, mostly electronic/trance/rock/acoustic...have a few hundred classical songs too that i listen to when i'm in the mood.

based on the rest of your system the Darths would be best. if you get the 650s the amp would need improvement.

Shahrose I am thinking the ULTRASone 750/2500 may be perfect.

Darth beyers I understand have more controlled bas and more mids then unmodded dt 770 pro. Its kind what I get with the Ultrasone 750 apart from better soundstage.

the bass goes just as deep but is tighter and better quality then om my unmodded DT 770 PRO 80 ohms. It has excellent mids and highs are coming strongly as well . It´s cheaper then Darths as well. About the same price as the 650 here in Europe.

I don´t know about how the Darth beyers is but the Ultrasone seem to me very balanced throughout

really...then it's surprising i see all this ultrasone bashing around here. although i've heard one consensus: ultrasones are capable of producing deep tight bass.

Regardless of amps, I would choose the 650 over 770 because for me it works for all music types, the 770 does not.

Even though the 650 improves as you go up the amp ladder, it still sounds very good to me with my Porta Corda which isn't a huge powerhouse but has a nice clean sound.

Since the 650 has a laid back sound, any amp that has enough power and doesn't color the sound should work fine...unlike the PA2v2 for instance.

It seesm like a strange comparision. One is an open can and the other is closed. Comparing the HD 650 to the DT880 or DT990 would make more sense. Or the Darth Beyer to another closed can. What kind of sound signature do you want?

not doubting the hd650s are great phones and overall more suited for many types of music than are the 770s...but with that said, i think most ppl would agree that the darth beyers and 770s stock are in different leagues.

EDIT: i edited my original post to include my preferences in sq

I have Darth Beyers, PROline 2500s, and HD650s. I like my Beyers, but they don't work well with a lot of the music I love. I listen to them selectively. My 650s, along with my prefered K340s, have been my mainstay for a while. I've only had the 2500s for a couple weeks, and I'm still going back and forth with my opinion, deferring judgment for awhile, but I don't think you'd be disappointed with the bass, if that's what you're looking for at this time, and they have better balance than the Darths. If I had to choose today, I'd say the 650s for the reasons others have stated above, but that's just me.

I believe most folks would agree that if you only had one decent can under $300 it would be the 650s for all around performance. one thing the darths do really well is perform at low levels. if you listen at lower volume they really give full impact.

True.

After your edit, it sounds like you're already making up your mind and are going to Darth your 990s. After reading your edit, I'd say it's a toss up. The 650 is my favorite headphone for all the genres you listed. But I'm not sure if it will have enough detail for you. It doesn't have in your face details. It's not muddy either: what it does is try to convey a real soundstage. Where there's more attenuation in treble. So it's BIG forte is classical and accoustic genres. I like it for electronica too, but others like the Beyers more extended treble (ie with good trip hop you get the deep bass lines and sparkly treble: the 650s give you nice upper sparkle too, but not as much up front detail). But since it sounds like you're attached to your 990s, I say go ahead and make up your mind: Darth em!

i thought you could only darth the 770s, also i dont think the sparkly high end of the 990s is for me, that's the one thing i want to change in my beyers, on some songs it sounds sibilant to me. after the eq though, it sounds fantastic...but i want a phone that doesn't need to be eq'ed much if at all. i was afraid the 650s might not have the bottom end that the 990s convey so well and richly.

the luke skybeyers on the other hand are almost perfect from the way ppl are describing them but they're very expensive (about 700 CDN in the cheapest config i'd like them)...so i was wondering what phone would be close to their performance for a lower price..and the hd650s came to mind. i still havent seen a good thorough comparison between the dt990s and the hd650s or the darths vs hd650s, that would also help.

The official headphile mod is to darth to 770s: but I would think you could still try modding the 990s by woodying them: since they're open, woodying them would suck out some detail. I haven't heard a darth myself, but stock 770/80s have a ton of bass. The site is not kidding....mucho bass. It more just depends how much bass you want: the 650s don't have as much bass as any of the Beyers. The 770s would have more bass then the 990s. You may like the 650s for accoustic and trance. You may like the "Luke SkyBeyer" for electronica. It's probably best if you can audition the HD650 first: that will give you some reference and help you find out if you're more into the Senn house sound, or the Beyer house sound.
