I know it's a subject that's been around the block a few million times too many. However, I was curious as to the origins of the phrase "Sennheiser veil." I wanted to know which head-fier it was that coined the phrase, so to speak. All in good fun, of course.

History leads us to the beginning...to before head-fi existed...when headphoneforumland was filled with darkness. And someone said "Let there be a headphone forum," and there was Headwize.

This was the earliest post I could dig up. It is from before Head-fi. However, this was only a quick review based on an audition in a store:
http://headwize.com/ubb/showpost.php...=25885&fpage=1

Aha! Now we come to the more damaging review from Joelongwood, which happens to reside in a thread where another headwizer was disappointed in the HD600:
http://headwize.com/ubb/showpost.php...=27947&fpage=5

On we go now to Head-fi, and we'll find two early threads that do most of the damage:
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showth...ghlight=veiled
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showth...highlight=veil

So in conclusion, the winner of the grand prize award for "originator of the phrase 'Sennheiser veil'" goes to......It's a tie!.....joelongwood and Vertigo-1.

LOL!

I'm still undecided on the veil issue. A couple of times I caught myself thinking "so that's what the veil is about"... but usually I prefer to call my HD 580 "relaxed".

At least in the HD650, the veil prominently exists. If you have never heard grados, akgs, or really anything but sennheiser the veil is extremely hard to hear, at least to me it was. However, after listening to the K1000, and then when I went back to the hd650, HOLY ****

The veil exists and is very real. Sorry folks but this isn't something that is "subjective". It is very real. One must listen to the K1000 and then the HD650 and you will see exactly what I mean.

Granted, I have not heard the HD600 which the veil is supposed to not be as bad on.

Also I will not argue that there are many people who simply just don't hear it or are used to it or even like it. But, it does exist. There is no getting around that.

Also I want to state that I have not heard the HD650 balanced... which some claim to be a "dynamic orpheus". This is a setup I would like to hear some day.

Garbage in, garbage out.

I own a pair of HD580's and there's no veil with my millet. If you're using underpowered equipment to drive the 580's, 600's or 650's...well, that's your own doing. That also goes for gear that lacks synergy.

When powered properly, these headphones sound smooth and laidback (no, not veiled).

I wonder how people came about to reference grado's or akg's to sennheiser's. Naturally, to those headphones the senn's sound veiled, but their not. Its just a signature sound. Tastes are subjective.

I dunno; Bose-Einstein, and looking for the veil leaves me cold.

.....it's only day two for my HD600s; but I can't find the veil, and I switch back and forth a lot between(Grado bright)MS2i and HD600!

I'll keep looking though!
