They're probably making a profit on each unit produced no doubt. Whether they recoup the costs involved in the design etc. through sales volume is another matter. But which is more profitable; the 6 series line-up or the 3 series line-up. I would gather the latter, just due to sheer volume. Of course I don't have any numbers, and I'm just using it as a general example.

My point was that companies will bring out higher end products and services to satisfy a niche market. There are consumers that are willing to buy the product, but they're not as many. It's a matter of prestige, branding and product placement rather than just pure profitability.

Or start an early publicity campaign promoting the new flagship as more veiled and musical than the existing flagship (650). A rush for the 650 ensues. Since "specs are subject to change without notice", they release the 700 trumpeting it as the clearest unveiled Senn yet. A pre-order rush for the 700 ensues.

Until Sennheiser makes an offical statement of the product, they can't say it exists.

Makes sense to me ^_^.

wow..they might be hiding it and then suddenly announcing it to the public

That's a good idea. Poor Guy. Don't want that to happen.

Also, what about this guy's title: Headphone Specialist. I want to work for Sennheiser so I can have that title as well.

Is it better than Headphoneus Supremus?

That is indeed funny, the HD650 new flagship uses the same technology and materials, and even the old driver diaphragm material, that you find in the HD580 that was designed 20 years ago...Not sure what "exiting technologies" are they talking about, unless the noise cancelling (which is not new BTW)

What are they supposed to say? "Yes, the HD700 is coming soon, I'd hold off on purchasing the HD650 if I were you"?

"Rumsfield is in for the long haul." - President Bush

The word "exciting" is one I would never associate with a Sennheiser headphone.

Shrug...personally, I think it's a despicable practice to deny said product if in fact they do have an HD700 in the works...I mean, c'mon, regardless of whether it's bad for business, it is outright lying. Should people be forgiven for being dishonest because it's in their interest to do so? There's no reason why the response couldn't be something to the effect of, "I'm sorry, but company policy prohibits me from discussing any potential unannounced future products, real or mythical." Nothing wrong with that ethically, and it certainly doesn't disclose any information which would hurt near-term profits.

Maybe I just don't have the fortitude for business.

Yes. This is what I find so odd. I mean it would be so easy to make a statement along those lines. It just seems very odd that Sennheiser would outright (and pretty strongly might I add) deny any plans whatsoever for an HD700 if, in a few months, they were to actually announce it's future release.

I think this is why I don't know what to think.

I gotta correct this! Number one, the 580 didn't come out 20 years ago: it came out 14 years ago. Number two, the 650 uses a different driver diaphragm then the 580.

What does it matter really? Do we honestly think Sennheiser will never ever make another headphone? Do we honestly think that the HD650 as it is now will always be the flagship dynamic headphone? Of course not. It's the when and the what that's the question, not if.

And I think we can rest assured that we'll be the last to know.

I think there's a slight difference between a new headphone coming out say early next year and one coming out in 3-5 years. That's what people are discussing.
