Another Moth Has Landed: The 300B Paradigm Is Here!

So, the new title of this forum has me a little worried given that I am not using my beautiful new amp for headphones as yet, but my K1000s will arrive this week and I will be in compliance then!

I got this amp through Audiogon, and it is in fabulous shape. The one modification that I am aware of is the disabling of the volume pot. For now, therefore, I have it connected to my TacT 2.2XP as a preamp and volume control. The source is an Onix CD-1 and it is playing on 70's vintage Klipsch Heresy speakers. Here are a couple quick pics of the temporary setup atop the very fine Moth crate (and full resolution pics are in my member photo gallery):

I just got her going this weekend and I am already falling in love with the sound of the 300B, especially these TJ Premium Mesh Plates! I will have to hear more before really saying much about the sound. For now, I can say that the background is silent and black, the beautiful mids and vocals of the 300B are well presented, and the bass is deep and very well-defined. The other thing about this amp that is already apparent, is the speed and dynamics. I am going to spend a lot of time listening to this wonderful amp, and really cannot wait for the K1000s to arrive.

Here is a random selection of pics with the cover on and off:

I hope to have more to say about the Moth after some more listening time. It is a shame that they are not in production, and that they are in short supply. Still, they can be had and certainly can be enjoyed!

Congrats! Your Moth looks fantastic.

There is something very familiar about it that I just can't put my finger on yet.

I can't wait to read your impressions and how the K-1000s mate.

I really dig the wooden Moth crate too.

Beautiful amp...

Make sure you try at least a couple of other 300B tubes before forming an impression.

Those TJ Mesh 300B tubes are some of the most overrated, overhyped tubes in all of tubedom IME.

Would you say the same hold true for the TJ mesh 2A3s?

The Paradigm is gorgeous, Al. Congrats on finding it. Love your first photo of the wood burned Moth logo on the crate - nice touch. Do come back and tell us how the K1000s sound when you've gotten them back, and given a listen.

Muawahaha, us moth owners are soon going to take over the boards! Yeah, right, all 5 of us

Great snag, the wood crate is nice, for sure! Too bad I have no room in my apartment to show it off, I would love to use mine as a rack.

I cannot say whether these TJ tubes are overrated by others but they sound fantastic in this amp. I want to try some Western Electrics and I am sure there are others that would be fun to roll in. Suggestions are more than welcome because I have no 300b experience.

I didn't realize the wood-burn logo and badge pics were so ginormous until this morning, so I resized those down a tad. The crate comments are gratifying. I like it way more than seems reasonable. It is incredibly well-constructed and quite pleasing aesthetically.

I'm shocked this amp sat so long on Audiogon. It is not quite as pretty as some of the other Moth creations, but it has a very powerful appearance to me. 10 watts never sounded so BIG! I feel very lucky to have gotten bitten by the K1K bug at the right time. I will definitely post up more amp impressions in general, but with a particular focus on the performance with K1Ks. If Nik is right about the synergy between those cans and 300B amps, then I am going to be very happy.

For a moment I thought the crate WAS the amp

How much are they?

They are long since out of production, but this one was listed for $1500 on Audiogon. I believe I am the third owner.

Congrats!!! and welcome to club Moth, or club Uthus as some have called it. That's a truly unique and beautiful amp. K1000's should be a wonderful match.

I am using TJ full music 2a3's, and they sound great to me.

As for the crate, I had to pick my amp up straight from the fedex terminal. When I went to the office, the big wooden crate was waiting for me. As I was signing for it, the worker asked, "you know, we are really curious, what is inside that thing?" It was pretty funny, they were all so anxious to find out, apparently they made some guesses. One of the ladies thought the little moths burned in the crate were cute. The gentleman also commented on how well the crate was constructed and was really impressed with its overall quality. Joel and Craig paid so much attention to those little details with the Moth products, you can go on and on.

Al the amp looks great! I was tempted about a month ago to pick up that amp. Enjoy!

I was thinking the same thing an then realized it's the case that my EC2A3 was in.

I am starting to regret putting my si2A3 up for sale. Although I do have a First Watt F1 on the way.
