CD Review Magazine. Does any one know of a similar periodical?

Hello the house!

I subscribe to a couple of audio magazines and they do offer a limited number of recording reviews each month but years ago I remember getting a monthly primarily devoted to reviewing musical offerings on CD.

They all so sold CD samplers from a multitude of indie labels/artists, several of which I purchased and enjoyed and this is the reason that I became a fan of the lovely and talented Connie Dover.

I have been unable to find it at my local book shoppe, and a some what cursory search of the internet did not (yet) show that the mag is still available all though I did see a couple of artists that listed CD Review "music samplers" from the 90s.

Does any one here remember this magazine, and is it still available for purchase/subscription? Perhaps there is a magazine with a similar mission that is out there, and if so, please let me know it's name.

Thank you.

Are you thinking of "Stereo Review" Magazine?

No my friend, it was called "CD Review". I enjoyed Stereo Review and Julian Hirsch (SP?) for many, many, years. I subscribe to Stereophile and The Absolute Sound, but they do not review as many recordings as I would like to see (per issue).

I did not see any thing resembling CD Review when I stopped by the magazine rack at a local book shoppe last week end. I used to subscribe to a Jazz magazine (the name escapes me), and perhaps I can find an issue for sale and look into a subscription if such a mag still exists.

no, i don't remember that one.

there was another -- the tracking angle. michael fremer, after he left the absolute sound, did this one. it's still a web site, but i find it difficult to navigate. fremer is now at stereophile (isn't just about everyone from the old tas -- except harry?).

i'd love to know something good, too. stereophile does a decent job for the little they do (they introduced me to kim richey, who is brilliant), but it would be nice to find something that offered more.

I am not familiar with the magazine that you are referring to so I can't really comment on similarity of mission. However, I have been enjoying "Paste" magazine for the past year and a half or so. It is a magazine made up primarily of music reviews and they include a CD sampler every month. I have found their reviews to be infomative and the sampler has given me a heads-up on several great bands. You might want to check it out...

I know that Magazine. I was a subscriber for it in 80/90 til the end. I still have the mags of 1993.

I also miss that magazine, and never found the other to substitute for CD Review!

Thank you. I just found it yesterday at the local Barnes & Noble Book Shoppe. I will be picking up a copy later today and then upon reviewing their content (hope fully they review jazz and traditonal vocals), I shall decide whether or not to subscribe.

I agree with you my friend. It was a very good magazine. I do not know if Paste will prove to be a match, but it is all I have found so far. I shall let you know how the two magazines compare as I too was a subscriber to CD Review and I shall be picking up a copy of Paste some time today.

The publisher for CD Review, Janet Gorman Grimes founder of the Peri Press died in 2001.  The periodical was sold to someone in Texas after her death but apparently is no longer published.  It was a great compilation of the meat of other reviews from magazines.  I have some old ones.
