Using max volume as line out

Thread Starter
I've read on some posts that if your player doesn't have a line-out function to use with your amp, it should emulate line out by maxing the volume, while others say they're completely different circuitry and doesn't make sense to amp a headphone out.

Anybody wanna fill me in on the details

Yep. The whole thing about the headphone out isn't over it's volume, its the fact that the signal passes through the opamp in that circuit.

yeah you dont want volume as line out- ideally you want the signaa to come directly out of your player. for ipod, try using a dock connector.

If no true line out is available on the portable player (dap, pcdp, etc), and you want to use an external amp, try setting the volume control to about 70% of maximum. If you sense or hear clipping, reduce to 50%, and listen more. If it sounds ok, bingo - use at 70% all the time.

I have a Zune, which so far has no line out (people are trying to figure out how to get one from the dock connector, but nothing yet). Sounds quite good (better than unamped iPod) from the headphone out, but even better taking the 70% max headphone out to a good portable amp.

For iPod, it is true. But don't apply this to other areas, too high output to the amp sometimes introduces overload distortion in the pre-amp section.
