Handling Genre

I have my music collection very organized on my computer. Perhaps a bit to organzied. Genre classification is HUGE with me. I go to Rhapsody and use whatever sub genre they label the artist as. 95% of the time they are right on the mark. Some times I disagree with them a little, but still go with their classifications.

Here's the list of genres I have:

Acid Jazz
Acid Rap
Adult Alternative
Alt Metal
Ambient Dub
Ambient House
Ambient Techno
Art & Progressive Rock
Beats & Breaks
Big Beat
Brit Rock
Contemporary R&B
Crossover Jazz
Dancehall
East Coast Underground
Electronica
Emo
Experimental Rap/Hip-Hop
Flamenco/Fado
Goth
Grunge
Hardcore
Indie Rap/Hip-Hop
Indie Rock
Industrial
Industrial Metal
Latin Pop
Leftfield/IDM
Mash-Ups
Metal
Neo-Soul
New Age Electronic
Noise Pop
Novelty Rap/Hip-Hop
Pop
Pop-Jazz
Pop-Reggae
Post-Grunge
Post-Punk
Power Pop
Pre-Punk
Punk-Pop
Quiet Storm
Rap/Hip-Hop
Rapcore
Ska Punk
Smooth Jazz
Soul
Stoner Rock
Street Hop
Teen Beat
Trip-Hop
Urban Folk
West Coast Rap/Hip-Hop
World

So my music is divided into 55 sub genres. I also use the basic genres like Rock, Pop, Hip Hop...etc. The genre field in my iTunes library looks like this:

ex) Electronic - Ambient Techno

So I have the main genre listed first and then the sub genre.

This works out perfect for playlist. Cause with rock and electronic music there are so many different styles. Sometimes I just want to hear a mix of a genre and sometimes i want to hear a specific style of the genre.

How do you guys handle genre?

Call me unorganized, but I don't. I go by artist. Too much stress for me to worry about Genre, I guess.

My music is also extremely organized, but I tend to make up genres on the spot based on what the music sounds like to me.

So far I haven't heard an good Jungle/Drum n' Bass. Could you recommend me a good artist? The electronic music I like usually has female voices.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has a zillion genres. What's this
Abstract Trip-Hop you speak of? Could you give me some examples?

I usually go by the genre used in the album's Wikipedia article. I like how people who are passionate about a specific band and genre tend to get into deep discussions about the exact right genre. Also, Wikipedia has articles on each individual genre by itself, so you can figure out exactly what its boundaries are, what genres influenced it, etc.

What computer software do you use to organize your music? Just Rhapsody or anything else? I am trying to figure out a way to make playlist for my ipod since I'm getting quite a bit of stuff on it.

I currently have my music library sorted to 38 genres, mostly under ID3V1 tags so any DAP can deal with it. In the past, I tried applying personalized genre tags but it became a real pain with DAPs since these became displayed as misc or were not displayed at all.

Anyway, I think one needs enough discs / albums, before one has to need to have sort of multiple / detailed genres.

What?! You have no Shoegazing listed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoegazer

The only music I keep separate from the rest is Classical.

Nothing specially, really. The only thing I have in there right now is Bjork

I use iTunes to organize my library and rhapsody for genre classification. Do you use smart playlist?

I hadn't heard of smart playlist but after reading your post I checked it out and it looks like something that will be really helpful.

haha... i second that! shoegazing's the best!

like JES says, i don't even bother with genres, i just go by artist. one main reason is sometimes Gracenote or whoever automatically submits the oddest genres on CDs i rip. another reason is that many artists go through many phases and hence "genre-jump" throughout their discography... artists tend to dismiss genres since they don't like to be pigeonholed into one specific style anyway.
