I am a new avid reader of this excellent forum. Does the following set up make sense?

Cambridge ZVM 60g
Senn 650's
Cardas Cables for 650
Hornet M

Thanks for any help.

I assume you mean the Creative ZVM...

This rig makes sense in that you have a reasonable portable source, a great portable amplifier and some headphones.

However. Where are you going to be using it? If exclusively at home, then maybe you want to look at a non-portable source, and a non-portable amp, both of which are likely to be better.

If portably, then not sure the 650's are the thing for you. They leak a lot of sound both in and out, and are not great for on the go.

Maybe give some more details on where you want to use this rig, and what sort of music you like, as well as a budget, and we are better placed to spend your money for you...

Welcome to head-fi, sorry about your wallet!

I agree with stewtheking's assessment. For home use, you are likely to find better performance for an amp at that price point. Additionally, you will have to worry about battery life as you will probably go through many charge/discharge cycles.

Using the portable player, although the sound quality may not be as good as dedicated components, seems reasonable. With my ipod I like to sit around somewhere plugged into the wall and just listen.

One obvious advantage of this setup is the portability with exception to the HD650. They really are huge.

On a final and maybe more important note, you are probably better off spending the money you would use on a cardas cable. The sound improvement isn't that great if existent at all, and you are certainly going to hear a greater improvement in +$200 in either source or amp. Maybe get those HD650s woodied?
