Durian is the best fruit ever - Page 2

i ate many tropical fruits when i was young. plenty i just dont know how to pronunce them in english, most of them grew in my back garden, we had everything, especially coconut my favorite. durian is good too, although i think most western people (no offense meant) think they are stinky. in one fear factor show you had to eat a durian. jackfruit is good too, easier to chop up and more solid.

this website sum up most of the tropical fruit, i like most of them, especially the dragon fruit.

I've been intrigued ever since I saw an episode of No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain (a good show BTW) (or maybe it was another food show) about them..he tried several varieties and I guess there's a bunch of different flavors.

They also showed this fruit called the Jackfruit, which is what Juicy Fruit is flavored after.

I can't get past the smell. I'd have to be pretty hungry to eat something that smells like that.

i dunno about that. there are some really foul cheeses out there. once visiting switzerland, i had cheese from a little town called appenzelle, which was known as one of the stinkiest cheeses in switzerland. i was only able to eat a few bites before getting grossed out. the scary thing is that it still stank up the car even though it was freezing cold outside.

I grew up with one of my best friend whose family has a tea plantation. They grow durian and coffee mixed along the hills of tea. I still remember that we camp out on the plantation every year during the durian season. The strange thing of durian is that the ripe spiky fruits drop from 20-30 foot tall tree over night or early morning. We had to camp out on the plantation and wake up around 4am to collect the ripe dropped ones, before some else does Everyday we sorted the fruits and only send the large and good looking ones to market, and keep the rest. We had so much that we had durian for every meal. Quite a few times we had nothing but durian for breakfast and lunch.

You tell me it's "Stink" ? Just send them my way if you really hate me and want me to suffer the durian torture...

i think the only one in my family that eats durian is my dad..honestly durian smells like bad meat. i can't go near it.

now, exotica fruit like dragon fruit, mangosteen, lychee and the like; those i'd hit up

You have to wonder about the mindset of the first person to ever eat durian.

Why would you put something so foul smelling in your mouth?

Mmmmm. Durian ice-cream :-) That brings back memories.

My wife is infamous for leaving a box of Durian-flavour cream crackers at the Scotts Valley office. People would wander in to the break room, try a cracker, then join the growing crowd of spectators waiting for the next victim :-)

I like rambutan also.

My mom is a pretty traditional Chinese woman, and she had me try Durian one day a few years ago. I think I lost 5 pounds vomiting that day.

I always thought dragon fruit is this.

^mm, maybe I should take the durian diet...

I remember going to a Gelato shop before where there was about 100+ flavours to choose from, and oddly enough the only bucket that was intentionally sealed shut was the Durian gelato. For good reason, you don't want the surrounding buckets of gelato to taste like durian...XD

I never figure out why some people think durian is stinky... until someone gave me a can of freeze-dried durian pulp. That smell did go away somewhat if you cook the dried pulp in milk, and it tasted passably good.

Very high caloric content, but otherwise nothing to worry about.
