OK, maybe not so grand. Two people in a pub isn't that gtrand. I met Duncan again today, and I was this time the one with the wheelbarrow. He took the HD600 and PX200 off my hands, as well as taking away an ATH-A900 to try out.
On the menu were Duncan's Koss KSC50 which he apparently hates but I didn't think were that bad, followed by my D22SL / D66SL / Senn PX200 / HD600 (for test only), the ATH-A900 and the ATH-A1000.
We also had a go at comparing my 7506 against his V6. The surprise of the sess. is that both of us could tell a slight difference between the V6 and the 7506. Not enough to warrant the price hike, but the 7506 were missing a slight mid-bass hump so sounded slightly more 'studio'. Odd? Not odd? Both phones have been used quite extensively so it's probably not lack of break-in. So maybe there is something subtly different about themafter all. It still doesn't warrant the price difference between the two (never mind the fact that the V6 isn't available outside the US) but there seems to be a difference. Or maybe it's just differences between batches of drivers...
I also (of course) got Audio-Technica fever after we parted and got an iCool (as referred to in the Blueberry Strawberry Lime thread. First impressions, surprisingly good for cheapies. More later.

To add to Bangramans views of the V6/7506...

I agree, the bass on the V6 was definetly slightly boomier... and the midrange on the 7506 was slightly more prenounced... also with regards to fit... the 7506 seemed ever so slightly looser...

Could be something as simple as product sample variation... having not got 5 pairs of V6 or 7506, we're not exactly giving you conclusive proof... but, whatever way you look at it there WAS a difference in sound between Bangramans 7506 and my V6

I'm merrily warming up the HD600 as we speak... and the ATH-A900s will be warmed up overnight for a comparison with the HD600s tomorrow

Hi Lou...

I only tried the A1000 on my Discman so it wasn't really the best of sources... I agree with Bangraman that the A900 is the same sound apart from being slightly cooler in the midrange... so, once i've warmed the A900s up, i'll do some comparing with my other 'phones... and let you know?

Compared to the PX200s they are a LOT clearer without that huge bloated bass... and also the D66s have quite a sparkling treble... I wouldn't call it bright or anything like that... but... maybe crisp would be a better way to describe it

A definite step up from the PX' in my opinion

HI: Great on the D66. I am hoping that they will sound like big headphones for my portable use. I am so tired of the small portable sound with all my portable cans so far. From what you posted they sound very promising for my portable use. A mini disc, A super mini amp, and the D66. Does this sound like a good combo to you?

Lou,

Myself and Bangraman didn't test them with an amp... only with my E905 discman output... and they sounded plenty good enough out of that...

I'm not really sure (it was a brief audition) whether they sound FULL sized though... maybe Bangraman could step in here...

Well...It depends on where you use them. They are portable headphones after all but I think it's the fullest-sounding you're going to get out of portables. But once again, Sony's "Saundo in Daiafuramu" design lets in too much outside noise in my opinion. I just bought an ATC-H5 headphone from guess who (I think I am an A-T junkie) and they've done a much better job of balancing critical noise transmission from outside with sealing. But as good as the ATC-H5's sound, the D66 still blows them away in a quiet room. The D66 definitely benefits with an amp, and they have a maximum power handling capacity of 1500mw (

HI: Now I am even more excited about getting the D66 eggos. I will be using them around the house and back Yard and when I take my dog out to the park or wherever. They sound great for I still might be able to head the phone ring with them on and thats good for my business work.

As Duncan said, he wouldn't be disappointed at what he'd pay for a D66 (<>£60). I must say after my initial doubts (mainly over the lack of sealing) it's probably the best 9,800 yen I've spent for headphones. You even get a cute bag. The PX200's have gone on sale for something like 8,500 yen. There is in my opinion no contest despite the super cool folding system and the case. But knowing the Japanese, they'll flock to the PX200... And say "Why doesn't this quite fit my head?"

I think the D66s have a great look to them, and since a fair number of people think they sound great for portable use, I might get them. Could you say more about the bass? My listening is mostly Rock and Hip Hop (and with an emphasis on hip hop likely in the future).

I don't think a great deal of resolution or soundstage is required for these kinds of music...even if I had it, I wouldn't much think about it. Basically, a clear, tight, and upfront sound is what I look for, with a great bass foundation.

You may know where I'm coming from, since I mentioned this in that PM a few days ago. If the A900/A1000 are right for me, hopefully the D66 is also appropriate, with the added benefit of being smaller/more portable.

thanks

Sorry about my wallet.

The PX200 are, IMO, total crap compared to the HD600s. But that's not the point, the point is that as a portable can they are a very worthwhile step up from the truly excellent MX500s. I don't find them either boomy, bloated or DARK. I agree about the top end, but only in comparison to the HD600s, and I don't want too much top, like those awful EX70s In the fit department, there really is only one way they fit me - symmetrically on the lugs.

<Sigh> These Eggos seem interesting, if a bit large for portable use. Perhaps you could compare them to the MX500s and HD600s?

I really find the widely (wildly) varying reactions to the PXs fascinating.

mtillman...

Do you find that there is a very narrow margin of error for the PX200s sound 'field'? get it right ~ and the lil' 'phones don't sound so bad, but get it wrong (which is all too easy to do) and you get a muddy mess of sound?

Where you've had them longer than me... maybe you find it easier to hit the 'sweet-spot' when you put them on?
