HD590 cable upgrade

Edit- Didn't know if this should go in cables, amps or pc's for sources so here it is. If this was teh wrong place feel free to move it.

Im no audiophile as you might guess, I have headphones that most people bash (590's) unamped on onboard evga 680i sound. Guess what though...I LOVE THEM.

Im not looking really for a big upgrade in sound quality, just something shorter little thicker and tougher, and less easy to tangle. I found a few cables mention after searching fora while but only actually found 1 of the mention to buy and it was $90. More than I'm willing to spend considering the headphones cost less than that. Hopefully I can get somethnig for uner $50.

One other question while I'm here...Im thinking of upgrading from onboard sound. My setup right now is the onboard optical is going into my sony reciever and headphones are plugged into analog. I was thinking of either getting a FubarII dac or a X-Fi Pro Elite, use that for the headphones and leave the reciever on the optical. Any ideas what I would get the best sound quality from? Maybe there is another option better than this, if there is feel free to let me know..

P.S. Please dont tell me these headphones aren't worth the upgrades, I'm 18 in college, its what I can afford, and I'm wuite happy. This stuff other than the cable can be used when I upgrade headphones also so no harm done.

Sadly, the price of an upgrade cable will run you almost the price of a equally good headphone (new). Still, if you're bent set on getting an upgraded cable, and don't want the stock one, headphile is one to consider. His 1.5M cable would be something to consider.

At this stage, a source/amp upgrade would be far more important than a cable upgrade, at least from a sound quality point of view. I'm somewhat out of the loop when it comes to that kind of stuff, but generally one would look at either separate DAC + amp or a combo DAC/amp, depending on what's more cost efficient. (Don't neglect the trusty AV-710 as an inexpensive digital output - bit perfect if configured carefully, which deviates from most guides posted -, which would increase the number of DAC choices.) Pay some attention to power sources, the amp in particular may benefit from a decently high supply voltage (like >= 12V).

Oh, and my 590s still make very nice secondary cans for bedside-fi. 650s do more things right, true, but due to the law of diminishing returns one has already climbed a large part of the sound quality ladder with only the 590s.

Yeah I figured a DAC would be much more important, I just want a more sturdy cable. This cable is wayyyy to long and tangles so easily.

My EVGA 680i mobo already has optical output that I could run to a dan then to amp. I have pretty much decided on the FubarII DAC unless you have a better suggestion. I have no idea on the amp yet. I dont need anything portable, definately dont want it to run on batteries and hopefully under 100 untill i get into this stuff a little more.
