You guys who like it wide open might want to try some K1000 cabling with good old Canare 4S11 to bump up the bass significantly
I don't think it was the best way to compare. I didn't like listening with the flaps wide open. I usually go about 1/4" but since it was so loud I didn't want to put them closer to my ear. Not only that but I did get glaring loudness that probably worked against the K-1000s when I tried them against the other phones. I also think the RWA amp wasn't at it's best, so it was a fun comparison but I wouldn't consider it scientific. One thing for sure is any of those phones would make someone happy.

Even with the bass heavy amps for the K-1000, I like a more closed angle otherwise it sounds thin to me.

Thanks Nik--you were definitely an inspiration to try out this rig. I was disappointed today that my K1000 did not arrive today, but I will have to wait until next weekend because we are going away for a week.

Not NOS Western Electrics? I have some WEs in mind, one way or the other, so that will be another interesting thing to try out.

Depending by the kind of K1000 yu will find... as I wrote, they sound different, with my K1000, the NOS WE 300B are too soft, the new WE are simply perfect, but I'm speaking of my amp, and I do not know your...

can't wait to hear your impression ...

Where can you find NOS WE 300b's? I was under the impression they're extremely rare? The current product sets are about $800 from WE, though a guy on ebay is always selling matched pairs for $500 new.

TubeWorld have (or had) one pair 1949 for more than 4000 $. There is one pair here in Italy (a friend of mine, for 2500 €). They are extremely rare, yes!

It's really a crying shame people are paying that kind of money for some glass bottles with vacuum, similar to your local 25 cent light bulb

I'm still holding out for the Svetlana factory to get their act together and truly fix their cathod/grid shorting problems of their SV300B tube. They cannot be recommended due to frequent failures from this design fault, but when working, these tubes sound absolutely awesome, far preferable IMO to TJ Meshies with much greater midrange solidity and detail, as well as beautiful 300B tonality. It's a dang shame they can't seem to fix this "little" design problem.

AS you know, some tubes are very rare and this is the reason for the hi price, sound is another thing...

The new WE 300B are awesome, I think the best 300B today available, but these tube must to go in the "right" amp for them... sinergy is the question.

I can't help wondering if you have homeowner's or renter's insurance.
