The difference between the Republican and Democratic racism is that the Republican racism is institutional. They discriminate as a matter of policy, whereas the dems do it on a personal level.

BTW, here's my impression of Trent Lott dancing his way out of trouble:

Trent Lott singing:

Oh, dreidl, dreidl, dreidl
I made it out of clay
Oh dreidl, dreidl, dreidl
With dreidl I shall play

Thank you everyone. Merry Kwanzukah. You see? I'm not a racist.

Well, how could I argue with the logic that Lott voting for Affirmative Action had racist intent. If you need a reason to be against Lott, that's the best one I've heard so far.

My biggest problem with ousting politicians from emotional reaction to public statements on non-policy issues is that a climate of political awareness encourages the self-censoring that conceals motivation. I'd rather have more information than a homogenous smear of sameness that thought-policing creates. So, sure, if you think Lott's a racist, fine, maybe he is. But you only knew that because he opened his mouth. By encouraging politicians to keep their traps shut, you amputate your own ability to know what they're thinking.

Personally, I'd rather know my enemies than have to guess at them.

Are you saying Clinton helped maintain the respectability of the Democratic party? HAH!

He kept the party interesting, but he sure didn't keep it respectable. And at a time when the Republicans are trying desperately to convince black voters they're the party of "inclusion," Lott's remarks and history hurt them more than anything.

Kelly, I didn't say Lott voted for affirmative action. I said he consistently voted AGAINST it. Now he claims to support it -- appearing on BET to try to cover his racism.

As to your other comments -- I'm simply addressing what would be in the best interests of the Republican party. Keep someone in office who's so clearly hurting them and the (supposed) message of inclusion they're trying to project? Or toss him out on his ass to clearly demonstrate how his words and actions are counter to what they stand for?

I completely agree with you. Although, it's not too difficult to ascertain who your friends and enemies are. All you have to do is look at the voting record. Those who vote to oppose abolishment of the institutional racism show their true colors regardless of the talk they talk during the election season.

Nah, that's not enough. I want him to resign from the Senate and I want him to take 3/4 of the republicans with him. They can all settle in Mississippi and lead their segregated, waspy little lives.
You know...

Segregation is alive and well today anyway due to local government and tax districts. Racial minorities tend to congregate in geographic locations. Tax is assessed georgraphically and funds are dispursed geographically. Thus, rich white neighborhoods have better tax-provided anemnities that most minorities do not have access to.

Clearly the wording is such that a racial minority COULD access these things but this is still over 90% as effective as excplit segregation.

Now, given that. Let's say someone, a senator perhaps, spoke out against representative taxation. He'd be called anti-American and the press would have another field day. Instead of calling them politicians, we should just call them "emotional manipulation leaders."

sure, but the democrat's racists are on a more personal level. The republicans have to battle against YEARS of their party being seen as rich-white-texans.

That, imho, is why Lott was sacrificed.

I think there is a much, much more sacrificing to be done to atone for those sins.
