Yes, it seems the AKG K#01 and K#00 cans are very power hungry. The K601, K501, and K400 have all needed good juice to really shine. With that aside, I can listen to them directly out of a PCDP...though you are very volume limited and the top end is not there.

Well I've broken in my 601s (played about 200 hours worth of pink noise through them), and I'm now a beleiver of break in !!!
Initially, during loud passages, or just when there was a lot going on, everything sounded bunched together, and the sound distorted a bit. I initially blamed the source (my lowly cartridge), but playing some tracks again, I was like WOW !!!
Even at volume, there is no break up (I guess they could break in a little more), and deep bass no longer rattles.

Am very happy

Which is why I do want an external amplifer, but can't due to the lack of cash (diverted somewhere else for the time being). Wondering how it would sound with the Heed Canamp.

I bought the K601s from Asr on the for-sale forums and they just arrived today! These things are ridiculously comfortable, even more so than the HD595. The self-adjusting headband is perfect for my head, because I think my ears are positioned weirdly and phones with solid headbands always tend to slant on the top of my head. For now, I think this is the sound I've been looking for. These sound great! The soundstage is quite noticeable and a pleasant new experience for me. Plus, I only have to turn up my CMOY halfway to get a good listening volume!

I'm a very happy customer, and a proud member of the AKG K601 owners club.

I've been using the 601 with the Darkvoice 336i, all I can say is with the right
music the sound is mesmerizing.

I can understand what other posters are saying regarding its lack of detail compared to its older brother. This is not so much an issue for me as I am interested in enjoying music, not inspecting it through an electron scanning microscope!

What is the best deal for the 601 online?

I think the best deal on these are $184 from Northern Sound and Light. Although they have a website, you'll have to order on the phone. They have positive feedback from members of these forums.

what amp you all using with k601?, I only got GV5 ! no more money to buy another amp
