AKG K601s' or K701s'/ opinions differ!!!

Getting ready to purchase my first pair of (Entry to Mid level Hi-End) headphones. I've researched, and it has come down between k601s' and k701s'. "WOW!", what a diffrence in opinion, Headroom recomm. 701s' and on our Forum (Head-Fi members) recomm. 601s'. I'm leaning toward the 601s, but why is there such a diffrence in opinion? Is it all about marketing?

anyone try this?

i plug my headfive to a sony dvd player watching some sitcom(martin season 1) and i never heard anything so good before. with k601, it's like i can count how many people were clapping their hands. and also there was a guest/singer on the show and he sounded so good. they're better than my dt990 pro, again.

Well, I used to own the K701, and now have the K601. Although I have never had the opportunity to hear them close enough in time together to judge between them, I am very happy with the K601 and I find that it sounds "better than I remember" the K701. Not the fairest of comparisons, but I don't miss the K701's, as they always sounded a bit more distant and detached to me.

The K601 and K701 are both fine headphones to be sure. If nothing else, the K601 is certainly a better value, I think.

FWIW, I prefer the Sennheiser HD600 to the HD650, so maybe I'm a 2nd banana kind of guy? It isn't the $$ either - just my preferences after careful listening. If you are interested in the K601, don't count out the HD600.

I think I may add these to my list of considered choices for my old tube amp. You people are doing your best to utterly confuse me. As if I wasn't already having problems with indecesion with dt 880, AKG k 701's and even HD 600's .

Didnt notice this thread when I made my thread. How do K601 and DT880 compare? Im mainly concerned about highs and bass, how do they differ? Would it be worth selling DT880 and getting these, or perhaps even trade if there would be someone willing to do it?

i'm gonna speculate here, but i'd think that the 601 might be a bit of a more forgiving phone. it sounds like the 601 doesn't push the highs as much as the 880s, and akgs tend to be very good with their voicing and their midband. i own the 501 and 701 and had the recent version of the 880s, so hopefully my conjecture isn't completely groundless.
perhaps Asr can comment as he owns the akg 401, 501, 601, and 701 (nice collection Steve!), and previously had dt880s.

K601 vs DT880? More extension on both on the DT880 for sure, and it's pretty obvious too. The DT880 is less "fun" though and does great with classical, jazz, etc.

The K601 is a great "fun" headphone, doesn't have the detail or the clarity of the DT880, but still a fine can.

I also still have my k601, it doesn't get much action since another "certain headphone" came along . But I agree, a fun can, nowhere near as detailed as the 325i, but overall they have a strangely similiar sound.

I miss the amazing soundstage and comfort.

Those are my thoughts exactly!

I too am an owner of both the k601 and the 325i. I owned the 325i first, and was hoping the k601 would provide a contrasting experience. But really, it doesn't. It seems like the two have a very similar musical presentation, but the 325i gives you a balls-to-the-wall, all-out attack and sparkle version while the k601 is more laid back. It's not a better-or-worse situation; the k601 is simply a little more restrained and chill. I personally find that I prefer the 325i, but I could easily see how someone else's preferences might go the other way.

That sets aside, of course, the fantastic soundstage of the k601. That fantastic soundstaging is why the k601 has become my main videogaming headphone. That and the comfort.

I'm gonna ressurect this thread

My K601's arrived in the mail this morning, but sadly, I had to go to work

Fortunately, days at work end, and I've spent the last two hours giving these new headphones a try. I've been playing them through a headphone amp I recently completed (http://sound.westhost.com/project70.htm), but through a crummy source (using my cheapy dvd player as a cd player, no dac !).

Regardless, I'm very happy with them thus far, and am looking forward to when they fully break in.

On the weekend (or sooner, depends how restless I get) I'll pull out the vinyl, and have a real go at them.

I personally found the K601 much better after burn-in, though it may have been all in the head. Congratulations on the K601 purchase.

I just bought a set and love them,they are incredibly comfortable !

Dirt cheap for what they offer up.I was originally sold on just the looks alone but after demoing them I was sold,at the time I had no where near enough cash to grab them,even at the reasonable price I found them at.I had to wait two full days before I could go back down to the music store to splurge on them.I feel like I am in audio heaven with these things on.Everything is soo new to me now,every time I listen to a cd its like I am hearing it for the first time all over again,I cannot properly describe how that makes me feel.I haven't smiled and grinned this much in years.

I must say un-amped,they are a little weak,and this is why I also picked up a pair of Beyer DT250-80's.
