Count me in! Just got mine, in love already
As about zero driving them, while its loud more than enough, my LD MKII is doing much better job, and i'm sure there are better options

Gear mentioned in this thread:

beyerdynamic DT 880 Premium Headphones
AKG K701 Studio Headphones

Thanks very much!

Does anyone else have experience with these and the Zero DAC? Would the Zero or the Total Bithead be more suited for these 'phones?

Maybe the title of this thread should be changed to "AKG K601 Appreciation Thread".

I do much like these phones, though! Almost definitely getting a pair.

Do you mean using the zero as an amp to drive them or just the DAC part of it?

At first, I would be using the built in amp, yes. So I would like to know how that works. But eventually I'd like to switch to a Little Dot MKII.

So I'd like to know how it functions as an amp/dac and just as a DAC preamp compared to something like the Total Bithead with a pair of K601s. Thanks a bunch. :]

i just broke my k400 and looking for a replacement...what do you guys think of k601 compare to k400 ?
I dont know about the K400, but its a lot tougher than the K501. I hope you have a big, nasty SS amp waiting to tame the 601 : if not, I'd look elsewhere. Still not sure why AKG felt the need to make the second-in-line to the current throne even harder to drive than big daddy 701 ...

I am thinking about joining your fine club. I just wanted to know if any of you play the k601 on Asus Xonar Essence STX? And how is that working for ya?

Cheers!

Well, I run my K601's perfectly well with a CTH, and it's cute and tiny.

I think that the fact that the 601 is harder to drive is just a side effect of using a lower cost standard wound voice coil on it vs the flat-wound vc on the 701. Since the magnetic field is more concentrated in a flat wound coil, I suspect that it would also be more efficient. In this case it looks like they possibly designed the 701 first, and then looked for ways to make a "cost reduced" model in the 601.

I've looked around and the M^3 seems to be a great amp but it's too expensive for me (like I said in my post above my budget is <$250, used or new).
The CK²III is cheaper and is said to be a nice performer but there's no info on a potential pairing with the 601s.
Same with the Shanling PH100, said to be great with the 701s but what about the 601?
I currently have a Zero Dac/Amp.
If someone has an other alternative in my budget don't hesitate!
Have a look at the CTH, It has been proven to drive just about any headphones thrown at it, and you should be able to build one for under $200. And they take up almost no room on a desk.. I've built two successfully, Runeight has a great site with all the details, as long as you read all the instructions (I put all the tombstoned diodes in backwards in my first one and was still able to getaway with only replacing a few parts (besides the diodes I couldn't re-use)). I use my 601's with it at work every day.

Any portable amps that can drive these things? I'm thinking about a D10 or Predator mainly...

I'd be thinking Lisa III. In fact, I'm thinking Lisa RS right now, but that wont be a portable. HPA occasionally mentions a portable that will drive his 600ohm phones - I'd be looking through some of his review threads. My impression of the D10 is that it struggles with some IEMs - not sure about the Predator.

Is there anyone here who tried to remove the foam pads between the pads and the driver (I saw this was written in the forum but there is not much impression about it)? It makes the mids a bit less dark (and less muddy for some). But I am not sure if removing such pieces harm the drivers. Do you think so?
I found that removing the foam increased the bass a bit but I decided they sound fine with the foam left in. I cant believe that I still prefer my K601 over my HD600. I have gone back and forth for awhile but the K601 just sounds more realistic and revealing of detail. My next headphone will be the K702.

I have them out right now, to me, it isn't a huge difference in sound. To me guitar has a little more power behind it and the cymbals crash slightly louder. I can't see how this would damage the drivers, there is still a plastic grille infront of them.
