Also have an idea in the back of my mind that I may end up buying a pair of Alpha Dogs if the trial pair ends up as good as I think they might be.  I'll be selling my K702 as well.  But if I was to buy an AKG again - I'm pretty sure it would be the K612.  Beautiful tonality.

Thanks for the review. Regarding the tonality thing, I am one of those who found the K701 to be "plasticy". Nice to see that the K612 is taking a different direction. Would you like to elaborate more on the K612 tonal aspect, in particular how it compares with the HD600. Thanks.

Question of priorities.  I can always rebuy it later if I don't end up liking the Alpha Dogs.

It seems like you like the K612 Pro better than the K701/2! Am now wondering how they compare to the new AKG K712 Pro xD

Enjoy them Joe.  I still have the K702 - but they're likely to go up FS soon.   Miss the 612 already.  Can't wait for my HD600 replacement drivers to get here .....

I got the K612 Pro yesterday. I'm very impressed with them. I have them paired up with the Hifiman EF2A. They are already my favorite headphone I own. I can't find anything they do wrong yet like all my other headphones, maybe in time I will find something, but so far I have nothing against them. I can listen to some albums on these without being bothered with harshness and/or sibilance like I do on the MA900 and K240. I plan on doing a full review of them compared to the MA900 when I have at least a couple weeks of use with the K612, because in my experience AKGs change a bit with burn-in and I want to see if my impressions stay roughly the same or if they change much.

New K612 owner. Definitely falling in love with the AKG house sound and the musical mids.

A proud K601 owner from China :)

Got two K601 with serial no. 16251 and 16743. In China, K701 is always referred as a princess from Austria and I think K601 could be referred as a younger princess from Austria :)

I really love its neutrality, non-fatiguing hearing experience. K601 really has some magic and shines when played with chamber music and I completely understand why some owners describe such magic as "sun shines on golden wool".

However, K601 is far from a all-rounder headphone. I have a old version K240DF and IMHO K240DF has far more accurate sound stage, better imaging and is more engaging for genres like pop music. I find myself always preferring K240DF when I decide to listen to some pop musics. But when it comes to some really serious music - classical music, K601 is always my favorite!

Anyone else hearing distortion in the 2.5khz area with their k612s? It seems to be more than a peak in that area to me. I am hearing what I can best describe as a shrill-type sound. It's quite harsh.

I do like the overall sound of the K612, and with a bit of EQ I can minimize the harshness but that also seems to remove some of the detail.

*edit* my setup is Foobar 2000 FLAC - ODAC - Burson Soloist

I don't hear it on my current setup, but I did hear on other systems though.

Me too, I heard the harshness in the dealer showroom set up. Otherwise I thought it is a nice pair of phones

From what I've been told by a friend is that they generally like tubes more and that there can be a harshness on certain systems. Seems they are a bit picky.

Are you using any type of bitperfect/kernelstreaming solution such as wasapi or asio? I would assume so, but just checking. I wouldn't trust a Windows computer for audio farther than I can throw it.

I use WASAPI through Foobar.  Thing is, none of my other headphones (MA900, X1, T1) exhibit this harshness with my setup.  So, that rules out any sort of software issue IMO.

I agree. Just checking.

It wouldn't be the first time akg has had resonance issues. I could take a listen on my 601 just to see if it's present in that model as well.
