Lately I've been enjoying my e4c's quite alot, and the K601s seem like they would give me an approximation of the e4c's in a full sized headphone, plenty of bass, emphasized mids and a bit of treble roll off.

Anymore impressions of them with a Headfive or other warm amps before I go ahead on these?
They are more than fine with my Micro Stack, but I prefer them with the Hornet over the Micro Amp.

But that's just me.

No, the bass isn't the biggest ever, but it's more than big enough - I certainly wouldn't want anymore with the likes of Mouse On Mars, and with Orbital it was just right. Also the head/soundstage is terrific, and really gives a sense of space and movement with electronica. I upgraded to these from HD595s which I found dull by comparison. The K601s do rock much better (livelier, more forward, but still no Grado) and also handle intimate acoustics and large-scale pieces better thanks to how they express space. The only thing is that they will mercilessly reveal bad recordings - I have my MS-1s for stuff that's mixed and mastered badly, and I when I really want to rock out.
Thanks SickMouthy!
I do have a headfive, and I love big bass, just not bass that totally overtakes the song. Also, I'm hearing that the k601's soundstage is bigger than the dt880's, which is great! These sound like great headphones for electronica. Thanks for clearing that up

I listen to ambient, downtempo, and trip hop. But I guess most electronica will do as a suitable test. Thank you!

With respect to electronica on the K601, artists like Orbital are fine and acceptable to most, but my reference artists are more like Crystal Method, Fluke, The Prodigy, etc. There are very few headphones that do those artists justice, and if anyone expects a headbanging experience with artists like those on the K601, sorry, it's the wrong headphone. The K601 does have good mid-bass energy, but extension is not its strong point.

Ahh, just adds to the confusion!=] Well, I don't think the extension on my dt770/80 is that great, either. When the bassline goes really, really low, the most I get is a slightly audible rumble, and that's when I'm not expecting to hear it(after I expect to hear it, it becomes less audible). So, if, being a "neutral" headphone, the k601 can reproduce dt770-like extension, then I think I'll be fine. If its extension is worse than the dt770, then I don't know

An amp certainly wouldn't hurt. What's the x-fi bay? I have an x-fi, but it only is the card - it doesn't have a fancy thingy to put in a 5.25" bay. Does that do a good job amping?

No it sucks! I own a HD555 also. Switching to the k601 i immediately noticed the bigger impendance of these cans( i have to double the volume to have the same results). I will buy a good amp very soon. For now i'm appreciating the bigger soundstage and the better details of these cans..

I've just got the AKG K601 - my first pair of "proper" headphones. My wife won't take 'em off & let me have a go; she keeps listening to her new Killers CD and going wow!

I have a HD555 as well and I am very tempted to upgrade to the k601. I'm using it with a PA2v2.

How much difference do you think I will get out of these compared to my senns?

well, i'm using them unamped now and they are surely superior cans in every aspect: comfort, sound and smell I can't wait to use them with a decent amp!

Hi everyone, it's my first post here. I'm connecting it straight to the x-fi output of my computer, it sounds great. I've seen a some people buy tube amps for their headphones, and is it recommended for my case? something like the little dot or the likes.

thanks!

Get a combo DAC/amp for a real upgrade. An amp alone off the X-Fi, while do-able, isn't recommended.

I'm having a similar issue with my girlfriend. She basically kidnapped my K601's during our holiday, forcing me to use my Shure E4C's all the time.
She's getting her own decent pair of headphones now, but she doesn't want to spend as much, so will probably be some Sennheiser HD555's.

If she does, I'd hide my K601's as she won't be satisfied with the HD555 sound and will be looking to steal your AKG's back (without having to spend any more money). Tell her to bite the bullet and pony up for the K601's. If she checks E-Bay or Buy.com she'll probably find them for a price she's willing to pay - and you'll get to keep and use yours.
