AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!! - Page 10

When I had the chance to try out a lot of cans with familiar music at a dedicated head-fi shop in Tokyo, I liked the 601's a lot. I'd say they are more forgiving than the DT880's and 701's which came across as too bright the first time I listened to them. If I hadn't gone for broke with my re-cabled 701's I probably would have bought 601's.

Been using K601 for couple of days. I like it. Infact, I like it a lot, much more than K701. The sound somewhat reminds me of HD580 though.

i had a brief listen hd580 long time ago. i like k601 a lot more though. how do you like the dt880(i see you have a dt880 from your signature) comparing with k601? i'm interested because i got a dt880 and almost wanted to get a k701 before getting that dt880

Its rather wierd. K601 has more bass presence and deeper sound than DT880. Not a night and day, but noticeable. This fights against some of the impressions of K701 vs. K601, its said that K601 lacks extension and weight compared to K701. I disagree, when I had K701 the sound was so airy and devoid of all natural weight in instruments that it was disturbing, this is even through tube-amp with warm tubes. In my ears there isnt much difference in bass extension between K601 and K701.

But anyway, I think K601 like something between DT880 and Sennheisers. Mids are strong in AKG way and highs are all there extended, yet laidback. (but not in that similar way to Sennheisers "veiled" laidback sound) After K601, DT880 sounds very thin and treble heavy and bass bit weightless. K601 sounds also more natural, (hell, I think its more natural than K701!) but also less exciting. It lacks DT880 sparkle. Im very divided which I like more, as I bought K601 to test it out and sell the one that is worse... So, K601 has more weight in overall bass and mids, less pronounced highs than DT880 producing quite natural sound. DT880 has weaker deep bass. Bass concentrates more on sharper slam sound. And treble is spiky giving the sound more sparkling and sharper sound. Midrange is flat, but sharp treble does affect midrange a bit. Overall less natural sound, and more analytical. This is only way I can put it in words.

One thing is for sure, I think K601 is way overlooked here, WAAYYY overlooked. Its big brother gets bit too much attention, only thing it wins in MY ears is absolutely insane soundstage which K601 doesnt have.

New here, First post WOOT!!!

I was wondering what portable amp would be best with these headphones. I'm new to the whole audiophile thing, I think the best headphones I ever used were koss td/80's. I don't know alot about this stuff *I've been reading alot though.* so any help would be appreciated. I want it to be portable because I travel alot.

What is your source? Since you're traveling I am assuming it's either a laptop or something like an ipod. If it's a laptop, I'd suggest something with a DAC, and if not - I don't envy your decision (check out the amp section of this forum to see what I am talking about - there are TONS of choices). Anyway, I can personally recommend iBasso from personal experience (I use the D1), but other than that I can't help much.

I'll be using it with an Ipod. I was looking at an Ibasso P2....what do you think of this model?

My next pair of headphones will likely be a pair around 100 bucks AD700, HD555 or something else, k240 perhaps

I would like to know if these would be a possible good upgrade after the next pair I get.

You say the k701 wins in soundstage, is the k601 soundstage bad or is it just weak in comparison to the k701s very expansive soundstage?
Chris:

I haven't heard the P2, but it seems to be a great amp. I can say that I really like my D1, but I hesitate to claim synergy between iBasso and the K601 simply because I haven't heard any other amps.

MusicallySilent:

The K601 has great sound stage, I think people just say it's not as ridiculously large as that of the K701. Sound stage is still a strong point of the K601, at least for me.

i just got mine a few minutes ago. first pair of audiophile headphones i've owned. i'm digging em so far. can't wait for my amp to arrive any day now.

and yeah, highest point so far has been the soundstage

I love mine! That was real original, wasn't it?
Does anyone use them with a Fubar 3? I just got mine and I'm a bit ambivalent about the match. I thought it clipped in high gain. By the way, how much clipping can damage a headphone? It only happened briefly, in 1 or 2 instances, but I worry. Anyone else tried the combo?

how is it in camparison with 701

Welcome to Head-fi,sorry about your wallet, and that amp would make for a decent pairing.

Its just as good,IMHO,this from a owner of both.I sold my K701's last year, but still have my K601's.I dont use my 601's as often as I used to
but they still get a fair bit of use around the house,by me or the wife.

Musically Silent, the 601's sound stage is like 90% of the 701's,very very very close overall.

This interests me because I'm thinking about buying that amp for work. While I use my K601 at home, I have a K500 at work. What headphones do you think match with the Fubar?
Scompton,
The only other pair of headphones I own are Grado SR60. If I think the Fubar is too much for the AKG's I surely won't plug the 32ohm high sensitivity SR 60 in it! Or maybe I should try the iPod buds ...
Hopefully someone else will post. When I got the Fubar Todd told me he thought they were a good match, and that he listens through it. I did some more listening on low gain and I don't have any problems, but the sound is kind of crappy, if that's what I get I'm disappointed frankly. My reference is how they sound out of the HP out on the Intergrated, Holy Cow, that's some awesome sound, dynamics and resolution to die for!
Anyone with knowledge of the above, please help us out!
