I know right! If FRG were a good way to guage things, it would look like the HD650 would be the most refined (because it doesn't have as many spikes). Maybe it is just the perception of the mid frequencies.....where AKGs are fuller, but then roll off in the treble. They get tagged as the most detailed. Beyers get tagged as bright because of their large spikes. And Senns get tagged as dark because of their soft treble. Though I have heard some reviews say that the k701 has more bass then the HD650....they could have been basing this on whatever equipment HeadRoom was using! I would like to try the k701 myself sometime.....but since the k501 left me so underwhelmed, I'm not anxious to.

I might just go and complete the microstack and k701 with that. In a few months.

They all have their faults, and graphs can be good at exposing those. The HD650's 10dB drop between 3-5khz, which is the presence band, is the 'veil'. The DT 880s treble peak is why they react badly to bright sources, etc etc.

More importantly though, FR graphs can be misleading. Take the HD 250 II measurement.. my brother purchased a pair since they didn't look too bad on the FR graph. A bit uneven sure, but really not that bad. They turned out to sound horrible, and really nothing like the graph.

MaloS,

I can't comment on the HD650s with my system but I can state that with a good amp/source the AKG K701s respond excellent with respect to the bass frequency range. I have a DC MOSFET 200W p/channel amplifier (see sig) that can drive anything :-) and the K701s perform very nicely.

Cheers.
