I wasn't aware of this limitation with Archos players. Thanks for enlightening me! What's the problem with them? CPUs not up to speed?

Kenwood has some weird Kenwood Lossless Audio format (seriously, I think it's called something like that.. they're taking a wild stab at ALAC I bet ).

The old Archos' have too-old and incapable general architectures to support extraneous codecs natively, or so I heard.

The Archos units decode in hardware instead of software as opposed to the other targets.

In other words, they have a MAS mp3 decoder chip in them that they use instead of using the processor to decode. The processor in these devices comes in at slightly under 12 MHz - not near enough to decode in software. While in theory it is possible to reprogram the chip, we have no docs or tools for writing new MAS DSP code and Micronas is very secretive about it.

The "obnoxious" Kenwood HD30GA9 that I owned until last month stored WAV files just fine and had way better SQ than a native Ipod or X5, though it was not as musical as WAV playback on the 4G Imod I use now for ultraportable.

I think it was the HD30GB9 that has the special internal amp, yes?

The GA9 and the new GB9 both have digital amps. I haven't heard the new one, have you?

is there a program converting FLAC to lets say apple lossless or wma lossless?
Yep - I use Sveta (www.dbpoweramp.com) it transcodes my FLAC to apple lossless on the fly.

it's too bad apple's gapless playback isn't backwards compatible to 4th gen iPods. i would probably revert back to their firmware to gain back playback time and a bit more stability from rockbox. this just adds to my dislike of apple. they totally left the older gen ipods in the dust. grrr.

iRiver iHP-1X0 (H1X0)

Bit perfect play back of FLAC on ATH-W5000 with RockBox iHP-140, optical input to Azur 840C then line-out to SuperMacro-IV. It is good to see a setup preconceived 2yrs ago, now working seamlessly together.

**** archos doesnt have flac? damnit.

any video/audio players that do?

Cowon players do. Think their video player is the A2 or something like that. They might even have some new player(s) coming out sometime as well.

I myself have been on the search for a DAP that supports FLAC, has a large storage capacity, good battery life and sounds great. The best possible scenario I have been able to come up with is an iRiver h340 (since I want color), replace the 40gb hdd with the Toshiba MK8007GAH 80gb hdd, get a 2100mah battery. So far it's looking like I can do this for around $400 maybe a little more.

i'm holding out for high capacity flash players. the ideal? cowon puts out a 30gb+ flash player that supports FLAC and does gapless playback. now i think all of this can happen but i'm not sure about the gapless playback. i don't know why more players don't support this natively. i love my trekstor vibez for this reason but it still is hdd based and only 12gb as a previous poster mentioned.
