Only the late, great Rio Karma and the Cowon iAudio X5 support FLAC natively. The iPod, the iRiver H100 series, and the H300 series support FLAC playback through Rockbox firmware.

don't ALL Cowon players support FLAC natively?
Pretty much, yeah. Not sure about their earlier models (pre-G3), though.

They sound great too.

The Vibez also plays FLAC natively & gaplessly. But at 12 GB it just won't hold very much FLAC goodness. Vibez and Karma are the only players in the history of the world that play FLAC gapless.

Not quite. Rockbox supports gapless FLAC playback on every platform it's been ported to.

Thx. I should have specified "natively" or "out of the box". It is a good point, though, that Rockbox expands the pool of potential FLAC DAP candidates.

when you think of how many DAPs natively support FLAC then throw in gapless it's no wonder rockbox was created. i have a rockbox'd iMod and absolutely love it but wanted something in a more portable package. the vibez is the only player i know of that has 12gb of FLAC gapless native support in its size.

i'm hoping once the 15+gb flash players start showing up that at least a few of them will have both FLAC and gapless support. oh, yeah... AND produce SQ on the level of cowon/iaudio. if and when that happens i'll be picking one of those puppies up ASAP!

Doesn't that obnoxious 30GB Kenwood player with the built-in preamp support FLAC as well?
^ Thats my understanding. ^

When is that obnoxtious thing gonna be avail in the states?
actually, i thought it was a proprietary lossless codec that kenwood developed and not FLAC. i remember one head-fi'er had one then sold it. nice looking unit and from what i understand sounded great.
I'm pretty certain it was another proprietary codec which is what many people who previewed it said - do we really need another lossless codec when there are already so many around (and FLAC is free so anyway can use it)

What about those DAPs that can run Rockbox? I'm using the Iriver iHP-140.
Imo that would be a rockboxed iPod nano!

This is almost true. Rockbox supports gapless FLAC playback on every software codec platform it's been ported to. It does not support FLAC on Archos players, but it does on the supported iPod, iriver, iAudio, and Toshiba models.
