I'd say that around 99% of the people here in Hawaii, remove their shoes before going into any home-it's very customary, and to some extremely rude not to do so,

i never wear my shoes indoor unless i am carryig firewood from the garage to the porch, but no one (that i have met yet) does in canada unless they are from america or australia! my mum's family comes up from california once per year and i am always caught grimmacing in my collar.
it just seems very odd to have shoes on inside (wondered about this very thing as I watch TV) ... also puts you at more risk for disease on your feet as they cannot air out. my cousin always has atheletes foot, but when he lived up here for 5 months, he lost it!
