i'm definitely warming up to the US show, now that Brent is helping with the writing.

The British version is great. The only problem is that once you have seen it, the US version just doesn't cut it.

One of my favorite characters on the American Office is Kelly. She is hilarious.

"I never really thought about death before Princess Diana died. That was the saddest funeral ever...That, and my sister's."

Also this exchange had me rolling...

Kelly: Jim!

Jim: Kelly…

Kelly: Oh my God I have so much to tell you.

Jim: Really?

Kelly: Yes. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, they had a baby named Suri. And then Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie they had a baby too and named it Shilo. And both babies are a-mazing!!!

Jim: Great. What’s new with you?

Kelly: I just told you.

I'm so glad they changed her character from the first couple of episodes where she was basically just an extra. The decision to make her into a valley girl that acts like she's still in high school was genius.

Mindy Kaling, the actress who plays Kelly, also writes and produces episodes of the show as does BJ Novak (Ryan).

The recent addition of Ed Helms, formerly of The Daily Show like Carell was fantastic as well. I feel the ensemble cast of the American Office is now stronger than the BBC version. But Ricky Gervais will always be the show because it's his creation. But I will say that if you wrote off the American Office after watching only the pilot and the first season, you're missing out.

I got into the BBC office about a year before american office aired. The first episode of american office was horrible- all gratuitous rip offs of BBC jokes.
As the american show goes on, it gets much funnier. From about the middle of season 1 it began to come into its own and the further it goes in that direction the better it gets. The only things I don't like are Kevin (Keith did the big slow guy much better) and when Michael Scott tries to be Ricky Gervais over the top- he cant pull it off. That being said, I like the Carrel character otherwise.

BBC office is one of my favorite comedies ever- american office is funny, but will never be in the same league. Strange though, it seems people have a difficult time liking them both- it seems most people are more fond of the version they saw first. I am one of the only people I know who likes them both.

Incidentally, my sig line is one of the many classic lines from BBC office.

anyone who's a fan of the BBC version and won't give the American version a fair shake as its own show, should read the insightful and accurate contrast of the two from a recent issue of The New Yorker.. you can find it here.

I'm glad somebody else shows some love for the BBC version. Please if you haven't seen it, rent it.

I'm glad you posted that. Along this article [includes video clips], I think commentary on the The Office versions cultural differences are very very interesting. Also next time someone here wants to bash iTunes, remember this.

It's been great that the American show has inched out of the shadow of the British version. Both are great, though Stephen Merchant & Ricky Gervais created someone really special with the first version.

I had never heard about the iTunes thing. It's incredible that 'The Office' was "hanging in the balance" given how good of a show it is. Maybe it's just too smart for the masses. It's seems that all of the comedies that were above and beyond, in my opinion, have either struggled to stay afloat or have succumbed to the lack of intelligent television watchers. Scrubs, my personal favorite show, has gone through several trials to stay on the air. Aressted Development, which is by many peoples account one of the funniest sitcoms ever broadcast, only made it three seasons. It's good to hear there is, at least, a little justice in the land of network sitcoms, however. 'The Office' has become a staple of my week along with 'Scrubs'. I don't think I'd be quite as happy without either of them.

Here are some of my favorite quotes(as I remember them).

#1:

Dwight: ....in fact, I can raise and lower my cholesterol by brain power alone.

Pam: Why would you want to raise your cholesterol?

Dwight: So I can lower it.

#2:

Dwight: I don't believe in health-care. Health care in the wild is "ow, I hurt my leg, I can't run, a lion eats me, I'm dead", but I'm not dead. I'm the lion. You're dead.

Not just him, he didn't create the show, Ricky Gervais is the one who created the show and whom the credit should be given to.

Never seen it. Never even heard of it. I thought this was a thread about people who like their job. Well I do. Guess I'll have to tear myself away from the office to watch the office. That or get tivo.
