Did you check the back of the drivers?

Hey Toonie,

I've conversed with head-fier Rhydon before about the HP-1000's. He has taken them apart before and he told me that the original HP-1000 drivers have DH-45 or DH-55 printed on them. Those were the model numbers of the drivers made by Primo Microphones.

I would start the claims process and say you have sent them into the maker for confermation, but you believe they have been tampered with and are not in advertised condition. Sorry man.

Can you get a good look at the driver through the metal mesh material on the reverse side of the enclosure where the JG badge is located? In natural light, do the drivers appear to have a white color with a little black and red/orangeor does the driver appear for the most part darker- color closer to black?

John and Kim over at GL can determine this but may not be necessary for you to post them to GL..so that you can act appropriately in the timeline of this transaction, in order to resolve.

I know Larry over at HF has extensive knowledge of this phone both assembled and in parts..see Headphile's site for his contact information or click on the HF to email him..he is on Headfi too..

Let us know how this turns out, and get that claim underway pronto

that's not good. the middle, or "star" of the driver can be black, but the rest of the driver should be white. if it's all the way black everywhere, that does not bode well for it being an HP1000 driver, i'm sorry to say.

looks like Toonie just got a legit HP1000 from a fellow head-fier on the sale boards here. so no matter what he has the real deal now even if the other pair turns out to be a wash. sorry to hear about your troubles Toonie, and i'm sure someone out there would still want to buy your first pair if just for the cool housing alone.

Ouch! Doesn't look good from that standpoint, Jahn's picture highlights it pretty well, but the back side of the drivers should esentially be white.

Also, all Joe Grado's and the old school John Grado RS-1's have the black driver cloth- yours is white. I believe if this set was sent to Grado to be repaired, they would have used the newer white driver cloth. Even worse, if they found the hp-1000 drivers to be dead, they would repair it with RS-1 drivers. I believe there is at least one headfier out there who owned a set of HP-1000's, and had the drivers replaced with RS-1 drivers. Could this be the same set?

Well I thought this too for the longest time, and recently chatted with Rhydon from Headfi, along with John and Kim over at Grado and confirmed the contrary.

The driver coverings for the RS phones havealways been white. And although I have seen pictures of older sets with the black covering too, perhaps these sets were mod'd or repaired when the black material was still around, or custom jobs?

Anyone else may chime in on this..

Jpelg had the only pair of HP2’s with RS-1 drivers that I was aware of. Who did he sell his pair to?

This is my old pair. The drivers were replaced by Joe Grado so I know they were authentic.






I hope everyone who has dealt with this seller has posted appropriate feedback on Head-Fi?

i think Toonie is getting a pair that you used to have.

Really? I don't think so. One of my old sets is still in the posession of a local headfier by me. The other I believe is on to maybe the 2nd or 3rd owner, but both sets had authentic hp-1000 drivers.

Anyway, I have sent the HPs to Grado overnight and they are going to call me tomorrow to let me know about the drivers.

I would be shocked if they are actually HP drivers since from every angle and in direct sunlight they looked black to me.

Thanks again for all of the replies and if they actually do have HP1000 drivers in them you can be sure you will see them listed in the FS forum for a reasonable price. I'll keep you posted.

maybe i was confused. i got this from photobob and he said he got this from.. someone in the forum..
