Vinyl junkie huh? So which sounds best, vinyl or CDs?

I've heard a lot about that, «CDs sound better, vinyls sound better» etc, and i've honestly still never heard a vinyl recording, but i'm really curious about knowing if there's a real quality difference between vinyls and CDs. Obviously yeah it's 2 different medias so there is definitely a difference, but i know that some DJ's are still releasing vinyls and that some companies are still creating vinyl turntables, so there must be a reason why :P

So i want to know if tests have been made for measuring audio quality by comparing CDs to audio DVDs to vinyls etc, and if not, well, your opinions!

This is definitely not one of my "pet" subjects, but this is a pretty good discussion:

Also, posting in the source sub-forum will probably yield a better response.

In a perfect world they would sound the same. Alas that is not the case, so it comes down to personal choice. Kind of like tubes vs solid state. The mystique of playing a LP is a large part of playing vinyl. Unfortunatly I only have a cd player (at this moment that is).

DJ's still release on vinyl because it's easier to work with during mixing. You can actually touch the record and that is a huge advantage over cd's.

True; scratching CDs just isn't the same, unless you like the sound of cracking bits

I grew up with cds. CDs are fine and offer many advantages, of course. But vinyl sounds significantly better. It's more mellow and musical, in my opinion.

I play my records when I really want to treat myself to hearing a good quality recording. I play my cds when I can't play my records.

That's probably exactly what I would have said. Records are just... magic. So when I can play my LPs (and I can once again, after a 12 year hiatus), I play my LPs.

I think it depends on the recording - IMO most of my CDs sound better than my records, however I just got the 30th Anniv 180g pressing of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and I've seen the vinyl light. WOW. Waaay better than any other recording I've heard. That album alone is enough that I'm looking seriously at a decent mid-fi turntable (maybe the lower end Pro-jekt?) as my current one is probably not that stellar.

Just my opinion:

Good digital is great, but good analog trumps all.

I do think it's more expensive to do analog well though.
