I was listening to him on CD in my car last night on the way home from visiting friends. In fact, the disc is still in my CD player.

Another one of the greats is gone but not forgotten. RIP James.

Ironically, on Saturday I brought James Brown Christmas with me to work. A bunch of us were working that day (it's a very busy time of year for us), and the CD was a huge hit with everyone. I'll bet I'd not taken that CD out for two or three years prior to that, and for whatever reason I took it with me to work that day.

I didn't even know he was ill...funny how that works, huh?

I think that once I'm done loading my daugther's new iPod Shuffle with music, I'm going upstairs to give James Brown Christmas another spin.

Sad...I don't know that I can use one of my favorite quotes any more...

Irreplaceable.

In terms of sheer impact, influence, and longevity, Brother James was truly a towering presence in R&B, Soul, Funk, and all of their offshoots filtering into Blaxploitation, Disco, Electronica, IDM, Rap, Jazz, Hip-Hop, hell--Krautrock even, you name it and he is there.

His singular vision and larger-than-life persona were rivaled perhaps only by Johnny Cash. Both had their hiccups with substances and run-ins with the law, but Brown's happened in the tabloid era long after Cash's had been forgotten. And more's the pity that JB didn't have a Rick Rubin onboard to usher him into late-period greatness similar to that which Cash enjoyed. But in any case, The James Brown Show was always a happening, right up to the last.

If there is any good to come out of his passing, perhaps it will result in a closer examination of the enormity of the James Brown canon, with richly-earned props floating in the direction of his spirit. And there is still much work to be done in properly tending to his vast back-catalogue. So let the reissues begin apace, hopefully done with the care and respect that they deserve.
Very well put. Thanks. I grew up on his music, along with Motown, Philly Soul, and the Memphis sound. Whatever problems he may have had in his later years, his mark on AMERICAN music cannot be debated nor denied. It's like I've lost a family member...

Finally, this album actually makes sense. To the man responsible for the illest beats in soul, rap, techno and so on, thank you for bringing a brand new bag to so many rhythm-challenged generations.

Amen to that. I'm confident that in the coming years JB will finally be recognized in the same company as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Say It Loud!

Props to a man whose music brought my spirits up plenty of times and got my body movin despite the protest from my brain. His music will truly live on.

Is that Funky Christmas? Or a different one? I was just listening that the other day... no, that's a lie! I've got nearly 100 Christmas CDs and usually make it through most of them, but to do so, I need to start in early December. Guess who is almost always first? Yup! The man himself. So it wasn't just the other day. His stuff is too good to put on hold.

Man, this is sad and unexpected news. He will most surely be missed by all music lovers. The man had guts, style, and an incredible dose of raw talent that just cannot be taught or replicated. The analogy to Johnny Cash is a good one, Dex. Thanks for that well expressed tribute.

Time for some more Funky Christmas, and real loud at that. JB would want us all to be bringing down the house about now!

Geez! Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, and now James Brown. Who's left?
