Hmm, after reading the "Beyerdynamic changes" thread, I'm quite interested in what/why they're changing the DT-770. Jan Meier says (if I'm understanding correctly) that the new version of the DT770 will be out in early January, will sound identical or nearly so, and has very little changes other than small cosmetic updates and a more expensive price.

If this is true, it would seem like it would be a good idea to buy an older, cheaper one now.

Am I correct?

Does anyone know the anticipated price for the new version of the DT-770?

Thanks!

Yeah.. but to some people the dt770pro is a tad uncomfortable due to the tight clamp. If I'm not mistaken the new dt770 has a much less pressure applied and supposed to be much more comfortable. Personally I wouldn't mind to fork out a few more dollars to get the newer version, since the dt770pro isn't that expensive and also they sound better than even headphones that cost twice..

Hrm, I dunno if I'd mind the tightness that much. That can always be changed.

How much is a "few more dollars," exactly?

Damnit, I just want a pair of these things!

I really hope they don't cheap out on the build quality. I know Beyerdynamic isn't Sony, but a lot of companies take revisions and an opportunity to cut corners.

At one point, Sennheiser almost "pulled a Sony" in corner-cutting. Remember the "bionetic" series of Sennheisers introduced in early 1999 (some of which are still currently available)? Well, the lower-end models in that line (HD 490 and HD 500, and to a lesser extent HD 495 and HD 570) sound too dark, and the higher models in that line (HD 590 and maybe HD 570) sound too bright. And except for perhaps the HD 495, none of the "bionetic" Sennheisers have gotten the same high reputation or renown as the models that they had replaced.

Let's just hope that Beyerdynamic doesn't cut corners on the new "professional" series models. And let's hope that the new DT-770 doesn't sound as dark as the current DT-770Pro.

AFAIK, the "classic" DT770-250 PRO will remain unchanged and will continue to be available even after the introduction of the new DT770.

Beyerdynamic basically had a pro-audio- (DTxx0Pro) and a hifi-series (DTxx1) for the last years. They considered the DT770Pro/250 and DT990Pro/250 to be appropriate for hifi usage, too, though. Nevertheless, even earlier Beyerdynamic hifi phones also had xx0-type-names - like the old DT660 and DT880 (very bass-heavy phones - I didn't like these very much...), which were very popular over here. The new DT770 and DT990 hifi phones are basically the DT770Pro/250 and DT990Pro/250 with slightly elongated (and silvery instead black steel) headbands and also slightly reduced clamping force - that's it. Whereas the new DT880 is a semi-open construction in between the closed DT770 and the open DT990. So you now have the choice between the pro-series, the slightly beefed up DTxx0-series and the DTxx1-series...

Greetings from Munich!

P.S.: Now I'm confused myself...

Thanks, lini, for that helpful information. Now it's more or less clear.

Do you have any idea how much of an increase in price the new non-Pro 770 will be?
