Stereophile-type Headphone Recommended Components? - Page 2

This is dynamic cans only:

Class A: R10 (despite significant flaws (low end rolloff), if I didn't put it here, Class A would be empty).
Class B: HP-1000, K-1000
Class C: RS-1, MS Pro, HD-650
Class D: HD-600, CD3000, ER-4S

All of these are headphones I think have strong sonic merits and would recommend to others looking for a top headphone.

I think it is better if only cans that currently available should be rated. The Grado HPs and the Sony R10s will have to be placed in the hall-of-fame category

Well then class A would be empty... and class B would only have K1000. I wouldn't really mind that.

I think this could be done, and could be very useful for newbies, but only if you keep the number of categories small and state that any headphone that makes the list at all is worth listening to. From the headphones that I have or have had:

Class A: Etymotic ER-4S/P, HD580
Class B: AKG K401, Grado SR-80
Class C: Senn PX200, Koss KSC-35

Class A would have all of the top 'phones. Class B would include decent phones with some significant flaw. Class C would include lower-end phones with some redeeming value.

I know some would argue that the HD580s should be Class B and the Grado SR-80s should be Class C, and I'd be OK with that. But if the whole thing turned into an argument of the relative merits of the CD3K vs. the HD600, the effort would be pointless and wouldn't really help newbies trying to get some handle on this hobby.

Let's face it, anyone using a list like this to try to decide between the R10, Orpheus and K1000 is an idiot. At some point, you declare that some group of cans are all great in their own way, and you need to listen and/or do additional research to decide which one is for you.

Very true . And this whole rating thing is very silly... hopefully everyone's taking it tongue-in-cheek, because obviously there's no such thing as an objective opinion about the sound of a pair of cans.

Even Stereophile's ratings are downright ridiculous in most ways... if a pair of cans was "Class A" a couple years ago, why would they be "Class D" now... did the sound of them change, just because something (theoretically) better came along? Were the HD600s "Class A" and suddenly became "Class B" the day the HD650 was released? Baah... LOL.

Agreed.

Class rating is often misleading and for headphones, not enough products available within the similar voicing category.

Too predictable as same ole products occupying (R10, K1k, Senn. 600 Stax et all ) Class A and Class B ratings.

Actually the R10's are currently available. So only the HP-1000's get to be in the hall-of-fame
