Exact Audio Copy isn't an encoder. It is a CD ripping program. You need to set it up to work with an encoder. I personally use the "external encoder" option and use LAME 3.97.

Sony VGP-XL1B2 Media Changer is the changer.

I got my changer as part of the Sony VAIO VGX-XL1 Digital Living System. I reviewed the unit on my website.

Earlier I voted for 160kbps and lower. Well since then I have shifted back to VBR V0 Q0 averaging 225kbps.

Same here. I'm converting 6,000 Flac files to MP3 right now and it is taking forever.

I converted about 1000 or so a few weeks ago with my 3.0c@3.4Ghz p4, it took around 10 hours... ugh, at least it has Hyperthreading(which means I still could use firefox w/o lag!) or I would have died!

Wavpack high for the PC and LAME -V 0 --vbr-new for the ipod

That's a long time. Wavpack decodes slower than FLAC and it ony took me 22 hours for 4100 songs. This is on an X2 3800+ at stock speed using foobar2000 .9.2. Foobar takes advantage of multiple cores to run an equal number of encoders. So my dual core encodes 2 tracks at a time, one for each core.

macky: you also have to remember that your AMD is a better architecture than my Pentum 4.

While this may be true, it wouldn't be a bad idea for you to take advantage of that HyperThreading and just let your transcode batch run overnight. That's what I do...

For CD's I own, FLAC, High Quality normally 1000kbps.
