Hi All,
Well, after doing my A/Bs between my recessed Beyers and My HD580s and finding the Beyers the better listen, I thought i'd try changing the IC just for novelties sake, to a very old, and somewhat generic looking QED cable I had lurking around...
Whilst some of the treble extension has gone, and soundstage seems to have collapsed slighty, the sound is a lot warmer ~ much more to my liking...
Just now, looking for a review on my aging Audioquest cable, I found this snippet of a review on TNT-Audio...
...Too bright it says... and there, is my problem
Now the AQ had great soundstaging to me, everything was right apart from that slightly sharp edge which subtracted from the mids, whereas the QED cable (must be nearly 10 years old) sounds a little TOO flat in comparison (even if tonally better)
I don't really want to spend $000's on a new IC, I can't justify the expense in my system, but your advice on a good all-round cable that has the vastness of the AQ, but the warmth of the QED cable would be much appreciated
Thanks

| The Audioquest "Quartz" is made from a different Metal, notably copper. I have before found solid core copper cables to sound good. Initially the "Quartz" did not seem to disappoint. The sense of acoustic space and fine detail certainly seemed to match my reference cable. On longer audition it became however clear that the "Quartz" added a rather fatiguing edge to anything passing through it. Specifically playing the massed vocals of a piece like Haendels "Messiah" found the soprano voices sounding as if the singers where being approached in a particularly rude way. The presentation of orchestral climaxes and low frequency Instruments like timpani also seemed diminished. With a VERY critical ear it was also evident that some detail, some of the acoustical space was being removed from the music. All in all, the "Quartz" can nevertheless be seen as a qualified success. In a system that is well balanced the "Quartz" can be obnoxious and too bright. But in a system that could use a little livening up and a better soundstaging the "Quartz" could easily be the ticket. |
