Ditching My 'Quartz' ~ Where Next?

Hi All,

Well, after doing my A/Bs between my recessed Beyers and My HD580s and finding the Beyers the better listen, I thought i'd try changing the IC just for novelties sake, to a very old, and somewhat generic looking QED cable I had lurking around...

Whilst some of the treble extension has gone, and soundstage seems to have collapsed slighty, the sound is a lot warmer ~ much more to my liking...

Just now, looking for a review on my aging Audioquest cable, I found this snippet of a review on TNT-Audio...
Quote:
The Audioquest "Quartz" is made from a different Metal, notably copper. I have before found solid core copper cables to sound good. Initially the "Quartz" did not seem to disappoint. The sense of acoustic space and fine detail certainly seemed to match my reference cable.

On longer audition it became however clear that the "Quartz" added a rather fatiguing edge to anything passing through it. Specifically playing the massed vocals of a piece like Haendels "Messiah" found the soprano voices sounding as if the singers where being approached in a particularly rude way. The presentation of orchestral climaxes and low frequency Instruments like timpani also seemed diminished. With a VERY critical ear it was also evident that some detail, some of the acoustical space was being removed from the music.

All in all, the "Quartz" can nevertheless be seen as a qualified success. In a system that is well balanced the "Quartz" can be obnoxious and too bright. But in a system that could use a little livening up and a better soundstaging the "Quartz" could easily be the ticket.
...Too bright it says... and there, is my problem

Now the AQ had great soundstaging to me, everything was right apart from that slightly sharp edge which subtracted from the mids, whereas the QED cable (must be nearly 10 years old) sounds a little TOO flat in comparison (even if tonally better)

I don't really want to spend $000's on a new IC, I can't justify the expense in my system, but your advice on a good all-round cable that has the vastness of the AQ, but the warmth of the QED cable would be much appreciated

Thanks

IMHO, Cardas Neutral Reference sounds like a nice place to go from here!! They're about $380 for a .5m pair new, but if you look around you might find a good price on some used products. RVD just sold his here a few days ago for about $190, so if you're patient and look you might find some others popping up on the radar for sale!!!

with that description, i don't think we can help ya much, unless you have an extra crowbar lying around

The golden referance seems to go well with what you're looking for, a slightly warmer cable, but still good. (i'm assuming you mean thosands, if you mean hundreds, get some outlaw PCA's)

Thanks for the replies...

I also posted a very similar question on the HFC forum, and there was one person that said to use the 'Chord Company: Solid', and someone else there PM'd me to say that he made ICs out of pure silver cable... costing about $140 for a .5m length

Would either of these sound suitable? (the DIY cable uses WTM(?) connectors... if that is of any help to you?)

Thanks

Hiya ServingEcuador...

The first cable, which i'll get at the end of January (finances permitting) is the one reviewed by Jon Beilin here which is pure silver throughout

Whereas the QED cable is erm, cheaper... by virtue of it having copper cores with silver plating... its well reviewed though

Thanks Duncan!! Do you happen to know if those still run $150 for a 1m run?? I just got some VD Nites, but might try buying a .5m run of those silver ICs to see which one sounds better, and then sell the other one!! That's a pretty good price if it is still available for that little!!!

24 hours in... and i'm hooked

Maybe this isn't the best cable for me, because I already have a clean treble coming out of my CD player, so the already extended treble now goes even further (kind of disconcerting out of the Senns... to know that i've never heard frequencies this high, this clearly before)... but it is really clean throughout the spectrum compared to the AQ cable I have...

The bass is a fair bit heavier too... giving my HD580s a real work-out compared to what they're used to

So, if you have a lean / dull sounding system... this cable could be the kick up the rear that it needs

I'm still looking forward to picking up one of those pure silver cables next month though
