What's your head-fi story? - Page 3

I bought a pair of Senns HD555, about two years ago at a local store, and when I did, I always wanted to move upto the 600's or 650's. But the only place back then to buy, was more or less, amazon.com, but did not ship those to Canada. So I just stuck with my HD555's, and enjoyed them alot.

Then I fell upon here, though hardforums.com I think, or some other forum, and started looking at the for sale stuff.

And I finally took the jump, and about two months in, I am $1100 down

One night, while watching a show lying in bed with my Panasonic headphones, I realized there were a few black specs on my pillow. "What the hell is this?" I said to myself. Realizing they were flakes from the ghetto "leather" earpads from the Panasonics, I began my search for a replacement headphone.

Being too lazy to go go Circuit City or Bestbuy, I browsed around online and stumbled on to head-fi. Got myself my HD595's thinking I'd never need anything else, but ended up dropping quite some money on a CMoy. "How did he spend alot on a cheap CMoy?" I'll tell you. Tools cost me a ton of money. Funny that you can just buy a CMoy for ~$50, I ultimately spent ~$300 for one... But at the same time, I now have the tools for another DIY project I want to start. =T That and I make all of the interconnects I need.

So where am I now? Check the sig and I'm waiting for Christmas to listen to my 701's that I'm getting as a gift. =T

Looking to validate my purchase of b&o a8's. I then turned on the SR-60 as a home can, picked up Cmoy parts and was on my way. A hop skip and a jump later I had the RS-1 and my lovely millet mybrid, then it was some e2c's for the sweet isolation, my hd580's. Then I sold the rs-1's to fund my portable upgrades, bought some electrets and won some jecklins. I am now a further short hop skip and jump (hopefully) away from buying the k1000 and completing (for now) my dynamic headphone journey. Then starteth the stax journey.

I was looking for a pair of those-big-headphones-that-cover-the-ears( I didn't know the word circumaural) so I went to FNAC(european music, computers, books store chain)

My budget was around 20-30€ and the Sennheiser HD457 at 29€ seemed like a good deal. THen I saw the HD650, in a big case. I was amased I didn't know such things existed. And the price almost 450€...but...

but then I picked one of the HD650 to check the specs and take a closer look and saw that near the bar code it was written 25€ instead of ~450€. I picked a different one and it had ~450. I couldn't believe that! I took those HD650 with me, paid 25€ and went home!!!

THe price was obviously mistaken and nobody noticed before. THem I went on the Web to search more info about the headphones I just bought and found thast they were the top of the line of sennheiser. Google also came up with this strange little website,head-fi. Aparently it was forum for headphones and hifi. Since then I have bought a few amps, started with DIY and got a few other phones such as Sr225, Ety er4p, shure e4c.
Since then I have spent much more than the correct price of a pair of HD650. :P

Venture

I have been an audiophile for over 30 yrs and my headphone venture started about two months ago. I have been on disability for 3months and needed something to keep me busy first sold my CJ Premier 11a and bought an Outlaw 2150 and then realized I didnt need the CAT SL1 Mk 11 preamp as the Outlaw was phenonemal so I listend to the Onkyo Dx7555 and found I was hearing more so I sold the Classe CDP .5 driving Revel F#0 in my two cahnnel rig. The 30 ay trial caused me to audion both the Sennheis 280 and the AKG 701 bought the AKG. I then wanted a tube amp so I bought the Litlle Dot MK11 and A Marantz DV6001 for my den. I also bouth an IPOD touch so the I received a good deal on the DEnon 1001 for the pod. Now I am hooked. I still ahead after selling all the equipment and buying all this now I have two nutty hobbies. I will probably buy a CMOY to screw around with the Ipod. So 30 years latter I am loving the new goodies and enjoying thid forum.

I have Bose to thank for head-fi: In 2007 my wife gave me a pair of QC2 Bose heaphones. I was really excited, listened to some music, then plugged them to my keyboard and started playing...... it died after 20 minutes of listening! 20 MINUTES! I returned them to the Apple store and started surfing the web. Head fi came up, read about UM2's, bought them and the rest is history. And believe me, I am really sorry for my wallet. My last acquisition has not arrived yet (Stax system). I bought it when the Missus was away in Russia. Now is not only my wallet I have to worry about it, but my wife!
Disclaimer: I grew up listening to Beethoven in my Dad's old Philips console, played piano since I was 5 and music has always been part of my life. The obsession with equipment I have no one to blame but you guys!!

OMG! this thread sounds like a meeting of Alcoholic Anonymous!!!!!!! Sick! very sick indeed!

I always loved good quality music. One fine morning I wanted to buy a portable player and thought i wanted something better than the stock earbuds. $20-$50 would be cool i thought, okay klipsch custom 2's for $70? Okay, $100 for headphones, $100 for mp3 player. Gotta look for reviews. I was randomly checking out earphone reviews at cnet and one line from the review of Shure 530's caught me.

Quote:
Of course--with any earbuds--you're not going to get sound as open as with full-size headphones or external speakers, but the Shure SE530s do an admirable job of opening the experience.
Full size headphones? I thought dj headphones would be cool, i still searched, i was searching at musician's friend when i stumbled across the brand AKG. I had never heard the name before that, but i thought it was cool. After a bit of searching, i found out that AKG's K240 was a legend in studio. At that moment i was considering the k240, or the k271. Confused, I asked my guardian angel google, and she showed me the way into head-fi. I realized that people are more interested in the K601/K701 than k240/271, seeing that i could have the k601's for about the same price as k271, i pulled the trigger on k601's. Right now, im looking for an amp and dac to go with this baby. And i forgot the portable thing i was after.

I was looking for headphones, found this place through google. I thought people were CRAZY for spending so much on headphones. Specifically on the Etymotic ER4P. However, I jumped straight into the craziness and bought a pair. Still an excellent pair of headphones. I use them all the time. It took me a couple of years before I ventured into the other forums (Source and Amps). The rest of the story is in my sig and feedback! The for sale forum was my downfall.

I googled for reviews of CX300's thinking that those and my Nokia 5800 would do me.
I have been searching for wonderful sound for years.
Most recently ICE. Just got that sorted and I mean sorted!
Then work changed and I started using the train.
Wanted to replace the sound I was missing from my ICE.
The 300's and 5800 were not going to cut it!
I remember looking at "pictures of your portable rig" thinking that all these esoteric rigs were a little over the top and being baffled by a pic of some custom phones.
Now, well see my sig and it ain't over yet!
This is a pretty friendly place to hang around.

I inherited my grandmother's estate and was looking for a pair of headphones so I looked at Google which pointed me to Head-Fi. I remember my first rig was quite humble with a Panasonic PCDP, DiMarzio Mini to Mini Extension cable, HeadRoom Cosmic Reference amplifier, and Sennheiser HD-600 with the transportable HeadRoom Traveler Bag. It was a total eargasm.

I think what keeps me involved in this community and hobby are the people that I come across and their ideas on what constitutes good quality sound. Today, I have an awesome reference audio system that I am justly proud of. I found a good hobby and a passion that I hope to adopt as my career change in this new year and decade. I plan on becoming a commissioned salesman in a high end audio dealer's store soon and an audio writer for an online or print audio magazine starting this year.

I moved into a different house, where I didn't have room for my speaker system any longer.

End of story.

Found this forum after I broke my iBuds... got sucked in big time and eventually moved to speakers. Might go back to headphones though, it was a cheaper hobby!
