What's your head-fi story?

Basically, tell us what got you started and what got you to where you are now.

I actually got into head-fi because of Bose (!!!). I had always been fascinated by those 3-2-1 system things at Best Buy, not to mention the oh, so cool QuietComfort 2s. I looked them up on eBay, read up what little I could about them, and somehow fell upon Shure's website. By that time I had already passed through at least half a dozen earphones, from iBuds to those nifty things that loop around your ear to the ones that fold up (namely, all the earphones you could grab at the BB checkout) on my crap PCDP. Then lucky me, my dad got me a Zen Nano Plus, which allowed me to run through another marathon of earbuds. Then came the glorious day I found Shure's website. I looked up the sweetness that is the E series, and fortunate me, I got a pair of E2s from my friend who worked at BB (can you tell where I like to be?) I didn't know much about Shure other than they made microphones, but all I know is that I had never heard such a huge amount of detail out of such a small piece of equipment before. Sure, the E2s aren't very high on the audiophile's Christmas Wishlist, but the seal coupled with the awesomeness of the driver I picked up a lot of details I never knew was present.

One unfortunate July this past summer, I fell onto head-fi and bought a brand-new pair of SR60s. I read reviews and threads day and night and posted a little. My friend sold me a Creative ZVM for really cheap, I picked up a PA2V2, and before I knew it, I found a nearby audio store and then planned a head-fi meet. Currently I'm only down about $700CAD, but I can expect a future brighter than a pair of 325is.

Basically, to cut a long story short, I landed from Mars in November 2002.

Came here looking to replace ibuds a little over a year ago. Went through SR60/MS1/ER6i/RS1. I've ebayed them all and sold the one of them here, so now I have nothing but my speakers on my computer and living room. Not sure what i'm gonna do next, but maybe an IEM again and call it quits; that's all I really need.

Came to replace iBuds, ended up with KSC75s. Havent changed anything since, but the 75s broke, and since im a procrastinator i have yet to sent them in. I should probably get on that though, i think the ibuds are giving out.

Came here looking for IEMs. Found them. Came back to tell everyone I washed them. DIY people sucked me in after that. Real busy right now; can't work on DIY projects, so I bide my time here in the landfill.

I was walking home one brisk summer's eve, when a crazy c*ck-eyed bald dude came outta nowhere and tried to mug me. I somehow pulled myself together and proceeded to shriek like a four-year-old girl. Distracted by my cries of cowardice, I nailed the bastard on the forehead with my iriver, knocking him the hell out. I then felt it only fair to free this man of his earthly belongings, as he had wished upon me.

A few months later I bought some alessandros.

Wanted info on electrostatic headphones, lurking here gave me some info. I think I came out of the woodwork and into the land of posting after I went Stax, although most of my threads seem to have been based around Jecklin Floats and Phonodomes.

I googled "How to get rid of all your money FAST" and I ended up here.

Came here in '03 looking for gaming phones. It quickly developed to primarily music phones. I just prefer headphones over speakers so much now.

preheadfi:
before any headphone purchasing was done, i got a little rca mp3 player. i fell in love with that little thing but wanted better quality. i thought that an ipod would offer better sound quality. back then, i knew nothing about files and bitrates.
a year later, i got an ipod for my birthday. i was thrilled and poked around itunes and found something called bitrate. not knowing what it was, i set it up 320kbps mp3.
my first headphone purchase was the sony ex51. it was ilounge influenced. i was very happy with those phones...but then someone said that headfi would have information.

headfi:
so i came over here in search of some iems and eye balled the shure e2g and westone um1. at the last moment, i spent a bit more money and got the shure e3g without any research on em.

so i wasn't as content with those and i thought an amp would improve the bass, so i got the pa2v2 amp. my first official set up was
ipod headphone jack - pa2v2- shure 3g which lasted about a week...
but that didn't last long because i had heard so much about the koss ksc75 here at headfi and got a pair at ratshack.
so i used the koss ksc75 isntead of the shure e3g
that set up lasted for two weeks or so...

more interested in headfi and headphones, i read so much about grados and alessadros. so i ordered the alessandro ms2i direct from alessandro...using cash...
so by the time that my ms2i, my setup was
ipod line out - ALO IC - pa2v2 - alessandro ms2i
this rig lated me a month or two. i was very happy with it

i wanted a portable can and bought a used pair of sony d66 eggos here at headfi
upgraded my amp to a maxxed portaphile...got an elpac power supply to go with it
i always loved the look of the 3G ipod, so i got a bought a used one
curiosity of the sennheiser sound led me to a purchase of a used hd580 and a 650 cable to go with it
then i got a used total bithead here at headfi so i could listen listen to music through my computer instead of carrying around my ipod, amp, power supply etc when i wanted to listen to music
and i haven't stopped there...i'm getting a used little dot + real soon...

future:
so here i am...with three ipods...two portable amps, one DAC/amp and one tube amp on the way. i hope i think i'm almost done with buying audio equipment.

i want to reduce it down to
home rig: better laptop - bithead - hd580...maybe upgrade to hd650, alessandro ms2i...maybe downgrade to ms1?
portable: one ipod - sony eggos, shure e4g

what changed is that i didnt' get kick ass computer speakers, but instead ended up building one amazing headpone rig for home desk use.

Very cool, guys. Thanks for sharing. It's interesting to see how everyone comes from such different contexts and yet arrives at the same place.
