AKG K340 Bamboo Mod

In anticipation of doing a comparison between the M^3 & the Darkvoice 336i (specifically for amplifying the K340), I wanted to make sure I had the K340 tweaked just right. TheSloth, if I'm remembering correctly, had removed the tape done during the Headphile treatment and covered the holes with cotton. I opened up the backs to have a looksie and decided I wanted to put some wood in there. I wasn't sure how, or even why, but I was going to get it done.

Houses, as many of you are aware, are full of wood. Wood floors, my brother's acoustic guitar, my bookshelves (oh wait, they're from IKEA--not wood), the kitchen cabinets, one of those cedar boxes with an elephant carved in the top, an incense holder. Well, I was running out of wood and none of my choices seemed so wise to plunder. On to the basement.

Not even packed up, just sitting out in the open on a stack of boxes: a holy didgeridoo. Purchased by my brother way back when Survivor: The Australian Outback first aired, it has since been left to rot in my basement. A few strokes of a fold-out camping saw and I had my pieces ready for insertion.

Insertion: It'd be nice to have a camera to help describe this, but I cut the bamboo into a one-centimeter thick ring, and then cut that into fifths or sixths (approx). I inserted one into each hole (four in all), and the fit was snug but not so tight that I won't be able to get them out again. I was keen on leaving the wiring intact and undamaged. The bamboo pieces are not the perfect size, but they wrap pretty closely around the plastic back of the exposed driver housing (which is circular in shape). I then put the cotton back into the holes and put everything back together.

It's somewhat difficult to do an A/B test here, but I did notice an increase in bass (measured by the fact that I needed to turn the variable bass boost way down on the M^3), as well as a more balanced sound from the Darkvoice (which had been low-end shy previously). I don't notice much of a substantial change other than that. I can say that nothing is diminished. I was worried I might end up with a muddy sound, but that's definitely not the case. I had hoped for a nicer sound from wood instruments, but I can't say that this was the case either.

All in all, the didgeridoo mod sounds good, and like it enough to keep it this way. I may attempt to cut some more exactly measured pieces. If anyone would like some (free) pieces I could probably cut some extras--I should probably make this didgeridoo disappear before my brother comes looking for it.

This is very interesting. You should really post up some pictures!
