kill the messenger

man, talk about a week from hell ! HeadWize is down again but this time it looks bad, real bad,as in we may have seen the last of .I know, there are more important issues this week. But JEEZ ! While not important in a global context,it is very important to me personally to have these diversions from the "real world" . To immerse myself in a topic I love in these times. To forget. To have great debate on an issue or teamwork on a project

Chu fought a valiant battle but to be honest,it never really felt the same with the changes.Something was just amis. The energy level was not as I remembered before the "fall".At least the resources will be maintained but I do fear the archives will be lost.Something has to be done to save them. There are threads that are priceless ! Maybe a CD rom with all the archives,I dunno man, pretty damn bleak.Like I said, tough week

Rick,Headfizer to the end (don't you DARE fold up your tent Jude ! Do not make me come over there man !)

Well, this sucks...

At least we have an active and established 'backup' (which might as well be the primary now). I'm telling ya, merge the two sites together...

Yeah, there really needs to be some kind of linkup between the projects/technical papers and a forum to discuss them. Those of us in the know can cross navigate but a total newbie would be baffled and that would be a shame.Look how many "recent" newbies are here . If not for the former linking at headwize I do not know if 'just a forum (sorry jude) " alone can sustain the community or attract new blood.Damn shame,I always thought the two would either co-exist or merge into one entity at some point.Oh well

Well that double sucks ...

I have to agree with the Rickster though. It just hasn't seemed the same since the big crash. Unfortunately I had a bad feeling that headwize was heading toward a permanent forum shutdown. I only hope the archives can be saved for the community.

Don't worry, Rick. I fully intend to keep Head-Fi growing. Lately I have been busy with work -- and this past week, I have been understandably distracted. I don't foresee that my time will free up too much anytime very soon, so some of the cool new things I want to do with Head-Fi may be delayed. JMT has taken over some of the responsibility in making some cool things happen (thanks JMT), and I'll likely write others to help with other cool things. This'll be a team effort, as it has been from day one.

I appreciate what Chu has done with HeadWize, and what he'll continue to do. This community here grew quickly because of the HeadWize base of forum users -- I'd never claim that we built Head-Fi from nothing, and we all know that.

Again, I have every intention of keeping Head-Fi up for as long as the community wants it. I will take those steps I feel necessary to assure its longevity. And, Rick, you're welcome to come over here any time, as long as you bring a bunch of your coolest DIY stuff for me to play with.

Rick (and everyone else), it appears Chu is keeping the other areas (just not the forums for now) open. The linkup is easy -- I'll just create a front page (which we always intended to do) at http://www.head-fi.org that will have a sort of table of contents (as HeadWize's pages have always had). And I will make sure on this page that we point anyone looking for the info that HeadWize provides in great abundance -- like the library and projects, etc. -- straight away to HeadWize (and it will be clearly marked that HeadWize is an entirely separate site and that the content they'll be looking at is HeadWize's).

I'll ask one of our web developers at the office for some help on this tomorrow (and I'll shoot for a front page this weekend).

"Because HeadWize is non-profit, I cannot link to other sites as a substitute for the forums unless they are also guaranteed non-profit and have an approved advertising scheme. So far, no such sites exist. I will make a decision in a few days."

Does anyone honestly think that Jude wants or needs to make money off this site?

Personally, I sure hope Chu will transfer the headwize archives over to head-fi, or at least do something with them. dammit, I want my ******** SL-SW860 review!

I will not engage in the debate over sponsorships, etc. again (but you all can if you want to ). Right now, the setup is very informal -- I'm paying for it. Of course, eventually I expect to be helped out by sponsors. I'll do what's necessary to keep it paid for, and will consider that my responsibility to make what needs to happen happen in that regard.

I understand Neruda's opinion about the archives, and I'm sure there are others who'd like to see the archives imported here (I'm one of them). But in light of everything that's happened in the world this last week, I'll not debate the issue with any of you (I don't have the energy or the desire to debate this issue again), and will only say that Chu will do as he sees fit, and, again, I won't debate about it anymore.

What has always worried me from the beginning of HeadWize's problems and the start up of this most wonderful site is a fragmentation of the worldwide headphone community. If that sounds a bit dramatic, trust me it is not.The way the rickster sees it right now there is a triangulation that semi glues this fragile thing together .That is Head-Fi as Forum,Headwize as resource, and Headroom as manufacturer backup and new resource developer ,as in the new graphs and cutting edge "forward looking" attitude.
But lose one of the base units and the rest will fall. The former niche that is headphones has been growing in interest recently,as the HE-01 Headroom writups all over the web prove, but if met with a dead end, those that would have aquired an interest will just wander forth to some other endevour.

How many that are active here would have thought a year ago such would be so ? I am guessing not many at all.I have read too many of the "thanks to you guys I am broke , but i have the coolest......." posts. All due to the tight knit and highly knowledgable group here, and formerly at headwize. It really is amazing to see posts from all over the planet.Different time zones means there is always something new,or even a new outlook from another land (the recent chinese amps, etc.)

So it may well take care of itself but my money is on it taking some hard work to make this work, not just for today but into the future

Rickasaurus will now step DOWN from the soap box (for now kiddies, only for now )

I don't disagree with you much, Rickster, but I do on that one. The community will always find a solution if the interest level and passion is there, and it's clearly here, at the very least with the core members, as well as with many of the newcomers who've also contributed a lot through posts and are fast becoming core members themselves.

What is lost can be rebuilt.

The DynamRick as defeatist? It doesn't suit you, man.

Just wondering.

Actually, this is one of the things that actual non-forum-type pages will help out a lot -- it'll give real content to index. HeadWize has done very well getting listed, and was fortunate to be listed on search engines before a lot of them went to a fee-for-listing/review model. Hopefully Chu will point to us too since "headphone" at many major search engines points right to HeadWize.

We'll figure it out, Rick -- there's always a way.

AND ANOTHER THING (heheheh)
I don't yet see the DIY forum activity up to the old standards.More of a bounce in,ask, get the answer, and out.
No good, there was as of two days ago multiple threads in the DIY forum that spanned several days and seen continuous activity.I THRIVE on the threads that make me think or do research.
Case in point is the "portable DAC" thread.Conversation is lost ,ended,as if someone left the room with all the light bulbs.
Maybe it is the disconnect from the headwize library/forums to Head-Fi , dunno. But I DO know this **** gotta change. We need to cross reference between the two sites as if they were one, only way it works. The "disconnect" means the fertile minds of the DIYers will just post findings on thier own site rather than share during the design stage.

The Rickmonster do not like this, not at all
