Need directions to get a taste in audiophile's world

Hi all,

I came here about a couple months ago looking for a suggestion on which headphone to get and got the Sony MDRv6. So far I'm happy with it as it was my first. But unfortunately, the MDR v6's cord is not long enough to go from the back on my computer to me. So what I did was using a 3.5mm male-female cable to extend it. Does this decrease the sound quality?

But the main gist of this topic is that I notice that we can connect our headphones to amps and what not. The thing is, I don't know anything about it. So, can some kind soul out there point me to where I can read up on headphones and amp and other tidbits? Does amp benefits headphones that does not require them? etc...

You should also look into getting a DAC, IMO that gives more of an improvement than an amp. Atleast that's how I experienced it.
