Opera – A first review - Page 10

Skylab -- your DB's are plugged into the 120 ohm jack -- does that one sound better than the 0 ohm one?

Jazz, does your Opera have two 0 Ohm outputs?
Mine has a 0 and a 120 Ohm-output.
I prefer the 0-ohm output for all HP's, included Senn 650 (indeed to kick it to some more life, with a little help from a brighter Siltech interconnect).

Yes - upon special request (this modification has been offered by your namesake -- you must have missed it).

Wished I had known that before! That would have been my option too.

Mine arrived today too. Haven't seen it yet, as the package arrived when I already was out of home. I won't make any comments about how it performs until the burn-in will be over...
The player I plan to use with it (Marantz SA-7S1) not here yet...going to burn-in and test my Opera on a SA-17S1.

I use exclusively the 0 ohm input on both my Meier amps.

One again this morning I am listening to the Opera, and it truly is an outstanding sounding amp. I think JaZz said it best: "Silky-smooth, detailed, spacious, organic, unobtrusive -- unspectacular, but not boring at all" - that's right. It's SOOOO liquid and smooth, but with gobs of detail. It's really amazing.

Skylab...

...I just got the confirmation from Jan that the Crossfeed circuit has indeed a built-in bass compensation. I knew that I've read his corresponding statement somewhere on the forum, but couldn't find it anymore.

hello...everyone
Can the DAC of opera output in it's pre-out?
Or pre-out only only function from the source of in-put?
Someone mention that level of it's dac is similar to DAC-1

It really is. I'm being serious. I like it even better than the DAC2.

Skylab, can I ask a off-topic question, as you have so many Corda amps. Why didn't you go for the Porta Corda for your portable rig? I just wonder....

I LOVE Meier amps, but I wasn't smitten with the PCIII - I thought it was a little lean sounding. I like the RSA amps better for portable use.

In reading this thread, the Opera seems to be a clear step-up from the Aria, but would one go so far as to say that the Opera sounds more than twice as good? Or has the point of diminishing returns been reached on the price / performance curve, where the Opera is marginally better, not drastically so?

If I think I would be pleased with the Aria/DAC driving my K701s, then I'd probably opt for the Aria over the Opera, and use the dollars "saved" to pickup a portable amp as well, e.g, the Tomahawk, for my Ipod / ER6is.

To help me choose between the Aria and Opera, any further comparisons would be most helpful. Also, does anyone know if Dr. Meier has an improved Aria (MKII) in the works?

Regards,
Don

The instructions don't tell anything about the burn-in. Anyways, I confirm that Meier suggested around 120-150h on the german forum hifi-forum.de. Mine has been burning-in with Channel Classic's brand new Mahler's Second (SACD) around 17h so far, and no...I didn't even try it with my headphones yet. I will give it a first check in a pair of hours.

My Opera has > 180 hours of burn in now. The sound improved noticeable as far I can remember the initial sound (It sounds better compared to my AVM V3 now, wich was initial not the case, if I can use that as a benchmark for an A/B compare).
From the start I found the Opera better for GRADO's compared tot the PreHead II SE. Actually it's the best amp for my Grado's in my chain.
I'm stll not impressed by the internal Dac (see above). In the weekend I will try different digital ICs, since everyone else seems to like the internal DAC. Or am I just spoiled by my Arcam?

I'm not sure how anyone can answer this question definitively. The Opera is a MUCH better amp than the Aria, which is, itself, the best amp I have ever heard in the $400 price range. But the Opera is really terrific. It's noticibly smoother, slightly warmer, more detailed, and reveals soundstages better than the Aria.
