Bought a known to be broken iPod touch from Nate, which he said he was selling because he didn't have Apple Care to get it fixed:

I took a chance, figuring I'll at least have a spare screen if it can't be fixed, but I was pretty sure it could be fixed for a fair price. I figured maybe it was a power regulator or something that got fried in the power outage.
Communication was good and Nate shipped it out immediately, before he picked up the money from Western Union! He even included the original box and accessories, which I was not expecting. The edit to his post adding that stuff was done after I has bought it at 6:55PM. When it arrived that same week, pressing and holding the power button or the power+menu button had no effect, and when I plugged it into the computer it was not recognized by finder or iTunes.
I called Apple and they said it was still under warrantee for another 280 days! Amazed that Nate didn't know this, on Friday I had them send a box out to pick it up, which arrived Tuesday. Unfortunately the case didn't have just "a couple knicks from opening her up to check the battery" - the rear of the case was trashed along to top edge, which I tried to smooth out by rubbing a block of wood against it to bend the metal back in place. It looked much better when I shipped it, but Apple decided it was damaged and abused but not defective, and declined the repair. I don't know if they determined this from the case damage, or from what it looked like inside. I will possibly tear it open just to see what they found that would be deemed "accidental damage or abuse" - they didn't say on the Apple repair website. Or, I may hire a DIY'er to look at it.
Nate, my advice is to call Apple first before you tear into an iPod that may be under warrantee. And, go online or something to find out how to open it properly. Vinnie at RWA opened my iPod to do my iMod without wrecking the case. Or, if you dug into it and that was what damaged it then warn the buyer before they ship it to Apple for repairs, so they don't have to pay Apple for the shipping when it has damage that isn't covered. I assumed it was electrical damage, like something burned up inside.
This is not negative feedback, other than I should have asked for pictures of the "couple of nicks" which in no way describes the appearance when it arrived. Maybe "30-40 nicks" would be more appropriate.

I gambled and lost, but I still have a spare screen for $80 total (assuming the screen is not burned out, then all I have is spare glass

).
