Headphones that Demand attention!!!

Thread Starter
I'm looking for a pair of headphones that will keep me actively listening through out the whole listening session.

I want to be so immerssed that I'm unable to do anything else but to focus on the music at hand, and that focus has to be aidded and abbided by a headphone that refuses to allow me to part my attention to anything else. Any suggestions?

I already have my Senns for the more laid back stuff.

Attributes that I look for

Wide/Deep soundstage
Air lots and lots of it ( I want to be immersed)
Detail.. Detail... Detail.... with out the treble extension, I like rolled off treble
Slightly warm mids and/or overall sound
Organic decay
Deep bass extension, but not emphasized bass.
Speed

and lastly, I would like to ideally have all the aforementiond attributes be acheivable at a low volume level.

most importantly, under 500 Dollars

Thanks y'all

A headphone that grabs your attention with rolled off treble? Isn't that an oxymoron?

It's going to be hard to really match all those criteria in one headphone. The closest matches I can think of are the Beyerdynamic DT 990, maybe the AKG K 271? I'm interested to see what others will recommend.

Looks like you are describing K340 here...

i would look at the music.

You're describing the Stax SRS-005A system although the soundstage is more open and airy than a Senn. Goes for about $399 from Audiocubes. Don't take my word for it, check out the threads.

I "demand" you to try a pair of Stax SR-404!
Goes for $366.00 on PriceJapan.

Ergo 2 with a warm/tube amp should do just nicely.

I dunno, sounds like an Omega 2 to me... except the$500 part so yes, 005 it is.

Grados are pretty attention grabbing, with somewhat rolled off treble, especially the SR60... IMHO

though they lack depth of soundstage

I think that huge treble spike before the rolloff may be a little disconcerting.

yup. i second this recommendation. The system sounds very 'right' and natural, very organic if it means anything. High is also a little subdued. i still haven't heard a phone set that has better midrange that these baby staxen (K501,701, K340, HD650, HF1). However, I do not perceive a wide soundstage, but that's something i couldn't care less. Also, bass of these little stax is not very deep. It does integrate well with the rest of the frequency spectrum though.

are the 005 system electrostatic or dynamic? Thanks for all the suggestions, keep em comming

PS. I have the grado sr 60s and they are attention grabing but I can only stand the sound for a half hour before my ears start to ring. so those are out

Not sure about the headphones, but you just described a 300B-based amplifier there. 300Bs powering a K340, maybe.

The 005 system is electrostatic, it includes the headphones and a small powered amp that runs from the line out of your source.
